Fresh Ginger Margarita

A Ginger Margarita is a light and refreshing twist to the classic tequila cocktail. The ginger gives it a bit of a kick without being too spicy.

Who doesn’t love a great margarita? The best margaritas will be balanced with tart and lightly sweet notes. Using a homemade sour mix helps to achieve this balance. Unlike the store-bought versions that are often overly sweet, the homemade version simply uses fresh lemon and lime juice, with a bit of agave nectar for sweetness.

With that said, feel free to use fresh squeezed lime juice in place of the sour mix in this recipe, especially since we are adding a good amount of the ginger simple syrup.

The ginger simple syrup is a key ingredient for these margaritas. Yes, it adds sweetness to the margarita, but that sweet is balanced by the earthy and spicy flavor of the fresh ginger. If you love experimenting with infused simple syrups, you’ll also love this fall spiced simple syrup.

Whether you simply want to relax with a single margarita, or you want to mix up a pitcher for your backyard party, you’re going to love these refreshing margaritas with a kick.

What tequila is best for margaritas?Use a mid-priced tequila in your margaritas since you’re mixing in a number of other ingredients as well.

Ingredients for a fresh Ginger Margarita:

  • Tequila: I prefer a silver tequila for margaritas.
  • Triple sec: It’s an orange liqueur that adds a fruity flavor as well as a balance of sweet and bitter.
  • Ginger simple syrup: Adds the complexity of ginger for a spicy kick.
  • Homemade sour mix: It’s a blend of lemon and lime juices.
  • Optional garnishes: Margarita salt and lime wheels.

Recipe Tip:

  • Prepare the ginger simple syrup a day in advance so it has a chance to chill in the fridge.

How to Prepare Ginger Margaritas:

  • If you’re using a salt rimmed glass, rub a piece of lime around the edge of the glass, then dip in margarita salt. Set aside.
  • Pour the tequila, triple sec, simple syrup, and sour mix into a shaker with ice. Shake until frothy, then strain into the margarita glass. Add the desired amount of ice.
  • If desired, garnish with a fresh lime wheel.

Make a Pitcher of Margaritas:

  • 12 ounces (1 ½ cups) tequila
  • 4 ounces (½ cup) triple sec
  • 8 ounces (1 cup) ginger simple syrup
  • 12 ounces (1 ½ cups) sour mix

  • Pour all of the ingredients into a large pitcher, and stir well. Refrigerate until chilled and ready to serve.
  • To serve, rim a glass with salt (if desired), fill with ice, then pour in the margarita mix.

Ingredient Substitutions:

  • Homemade sour mix: Fresh squeezed lime juice works well also.
  • Triple sec: Cointreau, Grand Marnier, and Orange Curacao will all work in place of the triple sec.
