Watermelon is one of my favorite fruit to enjoy on hot summer days. It is so refreshing no matter what form it takes.

The only thing is that once you cut open a watermelon, you need to use it up quickly. If you store it in the fridge, water will come out of it and as the cut pieces of fruit sit in this water, it will turn the watermelon pieces rancid.

After coming home with a watermelon and making Watermelon Curry and Italian Gelo di Melone, I still had a few ounces of leftover watermelon puree.

I had some tequila in the liquor cabinet, so I decided to reward myself with a Watermelon Margarita after all the hard work making those other Watermelon Recipes.

I had some extra blackberries in the fridge and so this cocktail was born.

Before we get to the perfect cocktail recipe for Watermelon Margarita, it is important to know about the key ingredient – Tequila.

Tequila is distilled from blue agave, sugarcane and yeast. Now there are several types of tequila from Silver Tequila to Extra Anejo, which is aged for over 3 years. So with so many options, you might be wondering which tequila is best?

What Kind of Tequila is Best for Margaritas?

Now this is a loaded question. Many purists will say the only type of tequila to make margaritas with is Tequila Blanco or Silver Tequila. This tequila is the purest form as it is generally bottled right after it is distilled, without aging.

However, I prefer to use Tequila Reposado. This tequila is aged for 2-12 months in oak barrels. Since it is aged, is has a more mellow and smooth flavor I think it helps create the perfect balance of flavors in this recipe. In my opinion, is the perfect tequila for mixed drinks – especially fruity cocktails because the alcohol does not punch you in the face.

As far as brands go, a lot of people love Patron. However, the last time I was in Mexico, I really fell in love with Don Julio. It is so smooth I can even drink it straight – which I cannot do with all tequila brands. Not to mention, it also has a lower price point than Patron.

However, if you are a Patron fan and that is what’s in your pantry, you can definitely make this delicious margarita recipe with Patron as well.

    Blackberry Ice

I added the blackberry just as a fun twist because I needed to use up the blackberries but they ended up being such a delicious addition to the margarita recipe. Those fruity berry notes add so much to the flavor of the margarita. The natural sweetness of the berries come shining through.

It is even better if you let the blackberry ice melt into the margarita and serve it up the next day. Day 2 Watermelon Margaritas with Blackberry Ice taste even better than when they are freshly made.

All you do to make this is fill up a jumbo ice tray with a few blackberries in each cavity. Add your water and freeze it up!

If you have any problems removing them from the trays, just hold the ice tray upside down and run a little hot water over it or dip the tray in a bowl of hot water.

Once you hear the ice cubes start to crackle, they will be easy to remove from the trays.

    Recipe Notes

Watermelon is a naturally sweet fruit, but how sweet is is can vary so you might want to add a little simple syrup, agave syrup or honey if you fruit is not that sweet. Taste if first before you decide if it needs added sugar.

If you would like to add more spice, you can add a few jalapeno slices to each glass.

Classic Margarita recipes usually do a salt rim on the glass. This recipes uses tajin spice mix instead, however, you can still do a plain salted rim if you prefer.

Making margaritas in the blender is the way to go if you are making a big batch of this refreshing Watermelon Margarita recipe.

    Variations

For a non-alcoholic version, replace the orange liqueur with orange juice and the tequila with more fresh watermelon juice.

Instead of watermelon, you can use other melon varieties like honey dew or cantaloupe.

Although a salt rim is more traditional, you can do a sugar rim if you prefer.

    Ingredients
    • ice cubes or crushed ice
    • Watermelon puree (best if made with seedless watermelon)
    • tequila
    • Orange Liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec)
    • fresh lime juice
    • tajin – a salt, lime and chili flavored salt blend. Alternately, rim the glass with plain coarse salt.
    • blackberries

    How to Make Watermelon Margarita

    • First make the blackberry ice by dropping a few blackberries into each cavity of a jumbo ice cube tray.
    • Fill it with water and put it in the freezer until it is completely frozen. It is best to do this the day before you plan you make your watermelon margaritas.
