During the pandemic, there has been lots of cocktail-making at home. Realizing that with a few simple ingredients, you, too, can make a restaurant-worthy cocktail, for a fraction of the price, is where it's at! To me, there is no better winter citrus ingredient than the blood orange. It's rather ugly on the outside, but then cut into it to reveal the deep red flesh, and it's so beautiful! Juice it, and the red flesh becomes a gorgeous hue of dark pink. Naturally, this makes for the most stunning cocktails! Now I know it seems a bit odd to put egg in your drink, but a frothy egg white cocktail is what takes it up next-level. It's like a little cloud floating on top of your cocktail, and mixes so well with that blood orange goodness. You have got to give this a try!

Ingredients
For the Simple Syrup
  • 1/4 c white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 c water
For the Cocktail
  • 4 oz vodka (or liquor of your choice)
  • 3 oz fresh squeezed blood orange juice (from about 2 oranges)
  • 2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice (from about 1 lime)
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • Few dashes of bitters
  • 2 egg whites
  • For garnish: thinly sliced blood oranges and a lime twist
Instructions
For the Simple Syrup
Combine equal parts sugar and water in a pan. (I'm suggesting 1/4 c of each, but make more if you like and store in a jar in your fridge for quick cocktail making!)
Cook over low heat just until sugar dissolves and mixture looks slightly thickened (syrup consistency).
For the Cocktail
Add all of the ingredients into a large shaker or jar with lid.
Shake vigorously for 20 seconds dry (no ice). Then add ice to shaker and shake again for 30 seconds.
Strain mixture into 2 glasses and top with thin slices of blood orange and a lime twist if desired!
Tips
  • When slicing the oranges to juice, save a thin slice out of the center for garnish.
  • Make lime twists from the zest before juicing for the cocktail.
