Easy Buttermilk Substitute

Do you know those days when you're craving some waffles, biscuits or perhaps a fluffy cake BUT you open the fridge and there's no buttermilk? You always end up thinking to yourself "I'll just use plain milk instead and call it a day". Well yea, you could definitely do that and the recipe will most likely work. The catch though is that the recipe won't work as well as it could.

Buttermilk is sour and the acidity from it, breaks down proteins and makes everything softer and fluffier, bottom line, it makes things much better!

Now, having buttermilk always available in the fridge isn't the usual scenario, so here is a quick and easy fix to that problem. No, this is not technically Buttermilk but the acidity from the lemon will do the job just as well!

Ingredients


  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice

Instructions


Put the milk in a glass, heat safe jar and microwave it for 30 seconds
Add the lemon juice, seal the jar and let it sit for 5mins
Shake it well until both ingredients are fully combined.
And it is ready to use!

Tips

  • Make sure the milk is warm, it cannot be too hot or cold, otherwise the milk won't coagulate when you add the lemon juice.
