This rice is my magical recipe to make all the family member get quickly around the dinner table. But first, we have to talk about the rice grains it selves. For this recipe you have to buy the basmati rice or any other good quality rice. Why? Because when you make this method of rice cooking which is covered pot, the quality of the rice is very important. Too long grains taint to break easily when stirring, too short taint to get sticky and by the way this one is perfect for sticky rice recipes. The brand I personally use is any good basmati rice in conventional stores. Rice is a dish that we all love small and big. My son is a picky eater, this is the only dish he loves that what made me think that maybe lots of people have at least one picky eater in their household...

the recipe is super easy, the cook time is about 30 to 40 min depending of the rice and the instruction in the back of the packaging. If you want to serve the rice with a protein and vegetables for example, try to start cooking the rice first so it get ready in the same time as the other dishes. This rice is a plain rice with a funny onion flavor, you can be creative and add whatever spice or fat in it. I used oil you can replace it with butter for example. Add some curcuma for more eastern flavor and so...

One cup basmati rice and one and half water.

Oil and 2 tbsp chopped onion

Add rice in the salter water.

Let water reducing

Cover and simmer

Fluff with a fork

Serve.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 tbsp chopped onion
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp salt
Instructions

In a heavy pot, heat the oil, add the onion and sautée. Add the cup and half of water bring to boil add salt and chicken cube if you will use it. The rice like the salt, it absorb it very well, so the water has to be salty enough. Bring to a boil the rice in a medium heat until it absorb the water, then cover the pot and low the minimum the heat.
Let it simmer for about 30 to 40min. After the first 15 min stir the rice gently and cover quickly. You don’t want to loose the steam otherwise it will not cook. DO NOT OPEN FREQUENTLY the rice will stop cooking. After about 30 min fluff with a fork and try it to see if it’s cooked.
Serve immediately with your favorite meat and vegetables.
Tips
  • to reheat the rice, place it in a pan add a little bit of water, cover with a lid and reduce the heat to the extreme minimum. The steam will just reheat the rice and don’t get them sticky.
