Fantastic Crab Cake Recipe That Will Blow You Away!

If I had to choose one meal that is my favorite, I would say crabcakes. I’m sharing a fantastic crab cake recipe that will blow you away!

My favorite seafood of all time is crab. It doesn’t matter to me how its prepared, I love it all. That being said, I do have to say that crab cakes are my favorite comfort food on the planet.

Truly.

If crab cakes are on the menu, I’m going to order them, whether from a high end restaurant to even a greasy spoon. Now, some are better than others, I will confess that, but there’s one restaurant in particular that stands out in my head for serving the best crab cake I’ve ever had in my life.

It was called The Lobster Dock located in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. I say “was” because it’s now closed. The chef/owner retired or something and closed up shop, leaving patrons like me wicked sad.

I mean, the nerve of this guy to pack it in….

He made delicious crab cakes and he knew it. It was on an episode of Beat Bobby Flay with the crab cake as the competing dish, and did indeed beat Bobby Flay.

That is how good these crab cakes were!

So in true fashion, I set out to TRY and replicate, or even come close to his recipe. I googled that episode trying to get the recipe. I watched it a couple times. That dude was pretty guarded. So then I turned to more research, scouring cookbooks and social media until I felt I had enough to work with for my own crab cake recipe.

To say it politely, I failed a few times with one attempt tasting more like canned chicken than fresh lump crab meat. Not sure what happened there, but certainly an epic fail.

Along with the fabulous crab cake, the chef topped each one with a corn / bell pepper/ relish of sorts that paired amazingly with the rémoulade. I’m telling you – at the risk of sounding too dramatic, I dang-near moaned with each bite.

As did everyone else.

After countless attempts at recreating this recipe, tweaking and re-tweaking at levels I had no idea could muster, I finally landed on a winner! Though I could not win if ever in competition with that guy, but I know my crab cake recipe would certainly receive a standing ovation. This is a recipe I make every single time we entertain, and if I don’t, then I’m questioned where said crab cakes are, when they’re coming out. The relish may seem odd to you, but trust me on this, it’s a game changer and compliments, enhances, and brings the whole crab cake thing in for a group hug.

I love crab.

  • 1 Tablespoon fresh tarragon finely chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon cajun seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup corn
  • 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup quick pickled cucumbers such as these
Remoulade Sauce
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp spicy brown mustard
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 3 tsp creole seasoning
Instructions

In a large bowl, combine crab meat, mayonnaise, tarragon, garlic, lemon juice, cajun seasoning, bread crumbs, salt and pepper.
Grate the onion over the crab mixture.
Combine thoroughly, stirring carefully trying not to break up crab meat.
Form into cakes and place on baking pan. Place baking pan with crab cakes into refrigerator and let set up for at least 2 hours.
In a large dutch oven, pour oil half way up pot. Heat oil to 350 degrees.
Carefully place crab cakes in oil, being careful not to over crowd. You may need to fry in multiple batches. Fry crab cakes until golden on one side (about 2 1/2 minutes) then flip over and fry until golden on second side.
Place on paper towel lined plate to drain extra grease on crab cakes. Serve warm with corn, pepper, and pickle relish.
FOR THE RELISH:
In a bowl, mix together corn, bell pepper and pickles. Reserve until ready to serve on crab cakes.
FOR THE REMOULADE:
Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and combine.
Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
