I couldn’t believe how rich and creamy these mashed potatoes came out.


I had no idea that making mashed potatoes in a pressure cooker would have such amazing results.


Mashed potatoes are one of our favorite side dishes. They’re perfect to serve with BBQ ribs, Pork Chops, and especially go great with grilled chicken drumsticks.


On a busy night, I wanted a way to save time in preparing mashed potatoes, so I figured why not try the Instant Pot?


They came out fantastic. Now, using my Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes recipe, I can have them on the table in about 15 minutes.

Like I said, an ideal side dish for grilling. Try them served with these bacon wrapped ribs. OMG! So good.


What do I need to make this recipe?

  • Instant Pot or similar pressure cooker brand


  • Potato masher or hand mixer


  • Cutting board


  • Paring knife


How do you make Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes?

Wash and dice your potatoes. Be sure to leave the skin on.

Add water.

Seal your Instant Pot and cook them for 5 minutes.


Do a rapid release.


Add the remaining ingredients and mash.

When you’re done, check the seasonings and adjust to your own personal taste preferences. The results are unbelievable.


What is the best way to mash potatoes?

I like to use my Kitchenaid hand mixer. But, if you don’t have one or don’t want to use it, you can use a simple potato masher instead.


Just whip them until smooth and creamy.


You don’t want to use it too much or you may lose some of the texture of the potato peels.


Can I double this recipe?

This recipe will serve 6 to 8 people. But, if you’re having a crowd, you can easily add more potatoes as long as you have a large enough Instant Pot.


Or, you can use fewer potatoes if you don’t need to serve 6 to 8 people.

What can I add to mashed potatoes?

This easy Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes recipe has margarine, salt, and pepper. But, you can adjust the taste by adding garlic powder or fresh garlic cloves as well.


Want to kick it up another notch? Try using butter instead of margarine and adding sour cream. Just be sure to add a little bit less milk so they aren’t too thin.

What are the best potatoes for mashed potatoes?

I use red potatoes because the skin is thin and I don’t have to peel the potatoes. But, you could make Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes with Yukon Gold as well.


Instant Pot mashed red potatoes are definitely my favorite. Experiment to find yours.


Can you keep mashed potatoes warm in the Instant Pot?

Yes, you can keep them in the pressure cooker on the “keep warm” setting for up to two hours. Just stir them and adjust the seasoning right before you want to serve them.


You might need to add a bit more butter depending on how long you have been keeping them warm.

What should I serve with this?

This is a popular side dish that goes well with almost any meal. Here are a few recipes that it would work particularly well with.


Stuffed pork chops with yams, apples, and cranberries are filled with cranberry stuffing and are bursting with flavor.


My beer can chicken on the grill is one of my favorite summer recipes. And, it would go perfectly with this recipe.


How do I store leftovers?

You can store your leftover Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.


To reheat them, just warm them in a small pot on the stove or in a microwavable safe dish in the microwave.


If you want to keep them for longer than 3 to 5 days, you will need to freeze them. Just place them in a freezer container. They will stay good for up to two months.


To use them another day, let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Then, heat them on the stove or microwave. You might need to add a bit more margarine or milk to make them creamy again.

Ingredients

  • 10 Red potatoes washed and diced
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1/4 Cup Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper
Instructions

Wash and dice the potatoes, leave the skins on. Place in the instant pot with water.
Place the lid on the instant pot and set the valve to the sealed position. Press pressure or manual cook button and set the time to 5 minutes. When the instant pot stops counting, release the pressure and remove the lid.
Add butter, salt, and pepper, mix with hand mixer or potato masher.

Tips
  • You can use margarine in place of the butter.
  • You may also add your own flavors. If you like garlic mashed potatoes, feel free to season with garlic.
  • Perhaps you like the ranch packet mix. Experiment and make them your own with your favorite seasonings.

    Can't imagine mashing potatoes without also using whole milk (some suggest to use warm milk). I've always used cold.
