For me, nothing quite hits the spot like a classic grilled cheese sandwich when I am craving something hearty and comforting for lunch. Sometimes I like to experiment with different fillings to make the sandwich even more decadent.

On this particular day I wanted the gooey, buttery and crispy grilled cheese sandwich as well as something fresh. I decided to add a few slices of tart Granny Smith apple to the sandwich and it was exactly what i was craving.

The unexpected flavours of the apple really compliment the ham and cheese, and paired together make the perfect grilled cheese filling.

The only disappointing thing about this sandwich, was that I didn't make more!

Begin by generously buttering two slices of bread (or for as many sandwiches that you will be making).

Flip the bread buttered side down and top each slice with your favorite cheese. Cheddar, Gouda and Havarti all work wonderfully with this combination.

Add a few slices of ham to the one side of the sandwich.

Thinly slice a Granny Smith apple and place it over the ham in a single layer.

Close up the sandwich with the other piece of bread, remembering to have the buttered sides out. In a frying pan over medium heat cook each side for a few minutes or until the bread is crispy and golden brown.

Cut the sandwich down the middle and enjoy!

All of the wonderful flavors and textures work so well together layered in this sandwich.

This grilled ham and cheese with apples is truly a must try!

Enjoy!
