Fall Harvest Dinner Party

The last few days have finally felt like fall in Nebraska. With the arrival of autumn, I’m reminded of how grateful I am to live here. I truly look forward to each new season and the changes that they brings. This week we’ve been spoiled with cool, crisp mornings and the most gorgeous sunsets. It’s the perfect weather for whipping up some cozy comfort food and for hosting a fall harvest dinner party.

Turkey Apple And Cheddar Panini

Every year I make the short 90-minute drive to visit family in the quaint town of Woodbine, Iowa. Nestled in the scenic Loess Hills, Woodbine is the host to one of the area’s largest fall festivals, Applefest.

The tradition of going to Applefest started when I was in college, almost twenty years ago. Now both of my girls join me on the trip each year. To this day, it’s one of the things I look forward to the most each fall.

The last weekend in September, the normally quiet brick streets become packed with flea market finds, crafts, food vendors, and every variety of apples imaginable. And this year, for the first time in a long time, we won’t be there to experience all of the fun.

Since we can’t be there in person, I decided to do the next best thing and bring a bit of Applefest right into our kitchen with this recipe for a turkey apple and cheddar panini.

Filled with ooey-gooey cheese and loads of apple goodness, here’s everything you need to make your own sandwich.

Ingredients for Turkey Apple And Cheddar Panini

  • 1 loaf of French bread, sliced
  • 3/4 cup spreadable butter, divided
  • 1 lb. oven-roasted turkey breast
  • 6 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • honey mustard (optional)

Instructions for Turkey Apple And Cheddar Panini

First, preheat a griddle or panini press while you prepare your ingredients. Then, cut the french bread into even slices.

Next, spread one tablespoon of butter on one side of each piece of bread. Place the French bread on the panini press, butter side down.

I love honey mustard so I like to slather my bread with it before adding the meat, cheese, and apples. You can skip this step if money mustard isn’t your thing.

Layer on the turkey, a few slices of apple, and one slice of cheese. Add more honey mustard to the second slice of bread, and place on top of the sandwich, mustard side down. Butter the top of the bread and close the panini press.

Grill for 3 – 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the sandwich is golden brown. When done, remove from the heat, cut into halves and serve immediately. Yum!

What Kind of Apples To Use For Your Panini

There are so many amazing apple varieties. You really can’t go wrong. Braeburn, Fuji, and Honeycrisp are my top go-to’s, but you can also try any of these apples.

  • Gala.
  • Golden Delicious
  • Granny Smith
  • Jonagold

What To Serve With Your Panini

There’s just something cozy and comforting about a grilled sandwich and a warm, hearty bowl of soup. It’s one of my absolute favorite meal combinations during the chilly autumn months.

For a match made in comfort food heaven, try pairing a turkey apple and cheddar panini with any of your favorite fall soups.
