Spiced Butterbeer-like Drink

Ever wonder what ale and butter could end up tasting like? Here's an alcoholic, butterbeer-like drink that could be fun to try out! The ale is really important for getting it right, so a nice, full-bodied, sweet ale is perfect. You could also go with an extra egg yolk if you want a heavier, possibly more creamy experience.

The butter also will rise up to the top because fat doesn't mix with water, but I don't find that it changes much with or without mixing it continually.

You will either love or feel completely apathetic about this spiced drink, so really, it's just a matter of giving it a go. Top off with whipped cream if you want a more impressive finish!

Ingredients

  • 500 ml ale
  • 0.3 inches ginger
  • 1/6 tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 cloves
  • 1/4 brown sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/8 cup butter
Instructions

In a medium saucepan over low heat, grate in the ginger, add the nutmeg, salt, cloves, and ale. Bring up to a low simmer, then take off the heat.
In the meantime, add the egg and sugar to a bowl and beat until paler in colour and a little fluffy.
Melt the butter in a bowl in the microwave.
When the ale has heated up enough, add a tablespoon of the ale to the egg mixture and mix to temper it (prevent scrambling).
Continue to add a few more tablespoons and mix. Then, add the whole egg mixture to the pan with the ale. Mix, then add the melted butter into the pan and mix again.
Strain into the glass you want to serve it in and sprinkle some nutmeg over.
The butter will rise to the top, so mix occasionally when drinking, it shouldn't affect the drinking experience.
