Creamy and Spicy Mexican Hot Chocolate Protein Oats made with cacao and chocolate protein powder, and a hint of cinnamon and cayenne pepper. A protein breakfast bowl with warm spices that tastes like the authentic Mexican chocolate drink!

I don’t quite remember where I got the idea for this oatmeal flavor – I think I actually Googled “unique oatmeal recipes” or “proats ideas” or something this on one of the lists.

WHAT IS MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE?HOW IS MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR AMERICAN HOT CHOCOLATE?

My exact questions the first time I heard the name.

Answer: Mexican Hot Chocolate is milk based, and spicy. Not entirely hot spicy, but the spices spicy.

There is cayenne pepper here for the “hot” spicy, but just a bit. Please follow the recipe on that part; My first attempt had too much and I had to add a ton of other stuff to tone it down!

No food waste so…

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup Steel Cut Oats, Dry, 60g, or 1⅓ cup cooked: 312g
  • ⅔ cup Water
  • ⅓ cup Almond Milk
  • 1½ cups Cauliflower Rice, 140g, or 2x oats, water, milk
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder
  • 2½ Tbsp Cacao Powder or Unsweetened Cocoa
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp Nutmeg
  • Pinch of Cayenne Pepper (1/16 tsp)
  • ¼ cup Almond Milk

Instructions

Cook Oats:

Bring water and ⅓ cup almond milk to boil in a saucepan.
Stir in the oats and bring to a boil again.
Cover with a lid, reduce heat to a low simmer, and let cook 20 minutes (or longer if needed) until soft and creamy. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking.
If oats get too thick, add water to thin it out.

Assemble:

Place cauliflower rice in a bowl and microwave on high for 1½ minutes until tender.
In a large bowl, add cooked oats, cauliflower rice, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder or cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg and cayenne pepper.
Pour in about ¼ cup milk and stir to combine. Add more milk if needed.
Top with all your favorites and serve hot!

Tips

  • Storage: Cool oats completely before storing. In an airtight container in the fridge for 5 days.Product
