Being a Southern cook is the best! The South is famous for so many great culinary dishes and we sure love to highlight them here. Take a gander at our HOMEMADE BISCUITS or our SAUSAGE GRAVY and even our WHITE ROUX RECIPE to get a good taste of the South.
Today, I get to share an Alabama born recipe and I am very excited about that.
I know what you are thinking. WHITE BBQ sauce? That just doesn’t fit. Trust me. It does. This mayo based creamy, zingy BBQ sauce has had Alabamians in love with it since 1925. Developed in Decatur at Big Bob’s BBQ, this has become a state signature recipe.
Of course, every Bama cook has their own version and The Buttered Home has one that we love as well. And so you can share in the creamy BBQ sauce craze, I will share it with you.
- 1 cup Duke’s Mayonnaise
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 tablespoon sour cream
- 1 tablespoon prepared ground mustard
~ Method ~
- Add all ingredients either in a small bowl or a mason jar.
- Whisk to combine or shake if mixing in a mason jar. You can use right away or store in the refrigerator for later. This recipe should last in the fridge for about two weeks, If it makes it that long!
This delicious staple in Alabama homes was first thought to be made in Decatur Alabama at Big Bob Gibson's Bar-B-Q . A delight for chicken and smoked pork, this creamy sauce is the perfect pairing.
Can I use another mayo?I don't know why you would. Duke's is the best but yes, you sure can. I would stay away from mayo's that are also considered salad dressings, as not to over power the other ingredients.
What makes this sauce different? The sauce is thought to have been born out of necessity. Sometimes, smoking meats can make them dry. This sauce helps put the moisture back into some meats that tend to dry out. It also makes a great marinade for this reason.
You can use this white gold on anything! We like it for a dipping sauce and as a finishing sauce for meat on the grill. It is good on fries, chicken, beef and even fish!
Be sure and give it a try. I promise you that you will love it!

First of all, how have I managed to live for 62 years as a mid-Missouri gal whose Poppa is a Maestro of all things meat, be it smoked, cured (we have a family recipe for country ham that's been passed down for decades), or pickled/brined, without having this amazing sauce in my life?!
BUT, in regard to this:
"Can I use another mayo? I don't know why you would. Duke's is the best but yes, you sure can."
I going to challenge you, my Foodie-Sister. 😄 While I love me some Hellman's, I'm going to put my own unique spin on your recipe by using Kewpie mayo. If you've never tried it, please give it a go! Its creamy, mildly vinegary (almost lemony), eggy, umami-packed essence is SO addictive.
But mayo preference notwithstanding, thank you so very much for sharing this amazing concoction. 🥰 One can never have too many sauces in their arsenal, and this one sounds exceptional. 😉
P.S. I'm thinking about how this sauce might lend its talents to a warm potato salad... 🤤
Ms. Brooke, you have changed me from an occasional onlooker to an avid follower with this recipe. ♥️ With Memorial Day Weekend right around the corner, I told Pops he needs to load up the smoker with a buncha chickens and I'm bringing the sauce.
You 'Bama cooks have got it goin' on! 😆 I did a 'test run', and I'm ADDICTED.
