Ingredients You'll Need
You only need a few simple ingredients for these truffles!
  • Chocolate Chips. Semi-sweet chocolate chips are what we are using in this recipe. You can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips if you would prefer.
  • Heavy Cream. You do need heavy cream for this recipe. The cream will help harden the truffle mixture when it is in the refrigerator. more on that later.
  • Vanilla Extract. To mellow out the flavor of the chocolate.
  • Things to roll the truffles in. You can use cocoa powder, festive sprinkles, or some more melted chocolate.

Equipment You'll Need

  • Cookie Sheet
  • Parchment Paper or a silicone mat
  • Saucepan
  • Bowl that is metal or glass

Let's Make Chocolate Christmas Truffles!

Add one inch of cold water to a small saucepan and place a metal or glass bowl on top of the saucepan so it sits on it. This is our double boiler.

Add the chocolate chips, heavy cream, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Turn the stove on low heat, do not go higher than medium heat because the chocolate will burn.

Melt all the ingredients over a double boiler.
As soon as the ingredients are melted together, turn off the heat.

Stay close to the stove and mix as the ingredients melt together. Once the chocolate has melted, turn off the stove and let the mixture come to room temperature. Then cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

After 1 hour, use a small ice cream scoop or a tablespoon and scoop out some of the truffle mixture. Roll the mixture in the palms of your hands to shape them into balls. Place them on a parchment lined cookie sheet and return the cookie sheet to the refrigerator for another 30 minutes.

An ice cream scoop makes sure the chocolate truffles are all the same size.
Parchment paper keeps the truffles from sticking to the baking sheet.

While the truffles harden, melt chocolate in a double boiler or a microwave safe bowl. Take one of the harden truffles and dip it in the chocolate. Place the truffle back on the cookie sheet and sprinkle with green sprinkles, red sprinkles, or your favorite festive sprinkles.

Let the truffles harden one more time in the refrigerator and then serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store leftover homemade chocolate truffles?

The best way to store leftover truffles is to store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Do you have to use heavy cream?

Yes, you can't use regular milk or low fat milk in these truffles. The heavy cream and the fat from the heavy cream is what is going to make the truffle mixture harden in the refrigerator. Otherwise, the mixture will be too liquid.

Can I use other types of chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate?

Yes! You can use white chocolate, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate in these delicious truffles.

Can I melt the chocolate in the microwave instead of over a double boiler?

Yes! You will need to heat the cream first so it is not cold when you add it to the melted chocolate. Add the chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl and melt the chocolate in 20-30 second intervals. Mix the chocolate after each interval. Then add the hot cream and vanilla extract. Mix again and refrigerate until the truffle mixture hardens.

The kids will love making these truffles with you!
