What is banana pudding fluff salad?

Fluff recipes typically involve a pudding mix, Cool Whip, and some type of fruit. Some add nuts and mini marshmallows. This fluff salad recipe is more of a dessert salad than it is a salad.

Pudding fluff recipes are easy recipes for potluck gatherings. We bring a large bowl and never have any leftovers to bring home.

Do I need to use instant pudding mix?

No, if you want to make your favorite banana pudding recipe from scratch, you can certainly do that. Using a boxed pudding mix is a wonderful way to save time when you make banana fluff.

The uncooked variety of banana pudding can be ready in just a few minutes. But, you can make banana fluff from scratch too.

Or, you can use vanilla pudding instead of banana pudding mix. I really like the banana flavor. It reminds me of banana cream pie.

Best whipped topping

Cool Whip is the brand name for a popular frozen whipped topping. You can use a store brand version.

Or, I really like the one that is made with stevia called TruWhip. It’s all-natural and has no transfats.

This banana pudding fluff recipe will not work with homemade whipped cream. Just pick up a container of frozen whipped topping or Cool Whip.

What kind of milk should I use?

Any type of milk works in this recipe. I’ve used everything from skim to whole milk with great results.

How ripe should the bananas be?

I prefer using ripe bananas for this recipe. They are sweeter and add more flavor to the fluff.

If you only have some that are starting to turn brown, those work well too. Just cut off any brown spots before adding them to the fluff.

Don’t use bananas that are too soft or they will be mushy when you mix the ingredients.

Cookie variations

There are many types of cookies that you can use in this recipe. I’ve listed some of the most popular ones below.

  • Nilla Wafers
  • Vanilla Wafers
  • Shortbread Cookies
  • Lemon Cookies
  • Graham Crackers

As you can see, there are lots of variations that you can use in this traditional fluff recipe. Be creative and experiment with different cookies.

Can I add cream cheese?

I’ve seen some variations of Banana Pudding Fluff that use it but I haven’t tried it. Let me know in the comments below if you try it.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Please make your Banana Pudding Fluff Salad right before serving it. You want the Nilla Wafers to be crunchy. If you make it ahead of time, you will have soggy Nilla Wafers.

You would be fine to make it about an hour before serving your Banana Pudding Fluff. But, any earlier and you risk having soggy vanilla wafers.
