Scare your Goblins with these Creepy Coconut Jello Shots

I wanted the Jello Shots to taste authentically like coconut, so I used cream of coconut. The cream of coconut leaves a thin crust on the top of the Jello Shot. I also added black gel food color to the Jello Shots, perfect for Halloween. VERY CREEPY.

Witches brew ingredients you’ll need to make these awesome Creepy Coconut Jello Shots

Coconut Jello Shot Ingredients
  • 1 1/4 Cups Coconut Vodka
  • 1/2 Cup Cream of Coconut
  • 2 Envelopes Gelatine
  • 1/4 Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 Cup Boiling Water
  • 1 Tsp Black Gel Food Color

For flavored vodkas, I like both Veil and Pinnacle; they are both reasonably priced.

These incredible colored Jello Shots don’t use any Jello but are made with gelatin. Gelatin gives them a solid color and a bit thicker consistency.

Feeling frightful? These ghoulish Creepy Coconut Jello Shots are to die for!

To make your Jello Shots, you’ll need Jello Shot cups. I use the short-round Jello Shot cups (above) and the tall squeezable Jello Shot cups.

Tips on Jello Shot Cups - Which one is right for you?

The  short-round Jello-Shot cups are the easiest to work with; they are sturdy and have a wide rim, so pouring the mixture into them is easy. They travel best; you can bring your Jello Shots to a party in a Ziploc bag. Unfortunately, they may require a mini plastic spoon to get the Jello Shot out of the cup, but the mini spoons are inexpensive.

The  tall squeezable Jello-Shot cups are difficult to work with because they are flimsy and have smaller openings. But they don’t need mini spoons or other utensils to get the Jello Shot out of the cup; squeeze them into your mouth; it’s a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, they don’t travel well; the lids do not seal tightly, so they are not stackable.

Large Spouted Mixing Bowl

The second most important item is a large mouth mixing bowl with a spout. The largemouth mixing bowl with a spout makes it easy to pour the liquid into the Jello Shot cups. I have seen ‘tools’ on Amazon that assist you with filling your Jello Shot cups, but the bowl with the spout works well. Of course, you may have a few drips here and there, but not enough for me to invest in a gadget.

How to mix the magic potion for Creepy Coconut Jello Shots

Jello-Shot Cups

Place 16 Jello Shot cups on a baking sheet.

Pour the Vodka into the spouted mixing bowl and sprinkle the gelatin on the top. Gelatin can be tricky to work with the first time you use it in a recipe. The secret is to ‘slowly’ sprinkle the gelatin on top of the liquid. If you see it clumping up, you are spreading it too quickly.

Gelatin soaking in Vodka

Let the gelatin mixture sit for 5 minutes.

In the meantime, boil the water. Add your black gel food color to 1 cup of boiling water and stir until combined. Then pour the water and food coloring mixture into the gelatin mixture and stir for 3 minutes. Add the sweetened condensed milk and cream of coconut and stir until combined well. Slowly pour the mixture into your Jello Shot cups until they are 3/4 full. Refrigerate for 2 hours before placing the lids on the Jello Shot cups.

Tips
  • Gelatin can be tricky to work with the first time you use it in a recipe. The secret is to ‘slowly‘ sprinkle the gelatin on top of the liquid. If you see it is clumping up, you are sprinkling too quickly. If you have some dry patches, don’t worry; ensure your water is boiling before adding it to the gelatin mixture and stir until the clumps are dissolved.
  • If you want darker black color, add a tablespoon of hot water and 1/4 teaspoon of black gel food coloring to a small bowl and stir until combined. Then add the food coloring mixture to your gelatin mixture and mix well.
  • To ensure the cream of coconut is combined, pour the contents of the can into a small bowl and whisk until smooth.
