What are Mexican Hot Dogs?

These tasty hot dogs can be most commonly found in Mexico City and the streets of Los Angeles. They originate in the capital of the Mexican state of Sonora and may also be called Sonoran dogs.

These dogs can be served in regular hot dog buns or on corn tortillas! The first time that the teenagers tried these we served them in a soft roll but next time we are totally trying them in tortillas.

Let’s start by making a fresh pico de gallo using this classic salsa recipe as a guide. It’s traditionally made with tomato, onion, bell peppers, salt, lime juice, and cilantro.

We are super fans of this Mexican crema hot sauce. It’s made locally and adds the perfect amount of heat to this recipe.

Directions:

1. Combine tomatoes, onion, peppers, fresh cilantro and the juice of one lime in a medium bowl and set aside.

2. Remove the dogs from the wrapper or natural casing.

3. Cook the hot dogs in a large skillet or pot filled with water over medium heat.

4. Boil for 4-6 minutes.

5. Using tongs, place the dog into a soft bun.

Some favorite toppings:

  • sour cream
  • pinto beans
  • diced white onion
  • strip of bacon
  • refried beans

Adding yellow mustard or ketchup to these might be sacraligious! You have to try this great hot dog recipe as is before making any changes – trust me on this one!

How long do you cook hot dogs?

  • Hot dogs may be cooked in a slow cooker on high for 2 hours or low for 3-4 hours.
  • When boiling hot dogs cook them for 4-6 minutes. Learn how to boil hot dogs in this post.
  • Hot dogs can be cooked on the BBQ grill for 7-10 minutes.
  • Smoked hot dogs take 60 minutes to cook when smoked at 225 degrees F.
  • Baked hot dogs in the oven take about 15 minutes at 350 degrees F. Learn how to bake hot dogs in this post.

Leftover hot dogs may be stored in an airtight container for up to one week in the fridge. You can microwave hot dogs to re heat them to use for later.

These dogs are even more amazingly delicious than they look! We clearly love our hot dogs around here because we’ve tried them a dozen different ways…

To make this authentic, it must be served with pinto beans and creama on the bun as well as mayonnaise. This recipe is basically a hot dog with salsa
