Simple And Classic Fruit Salad

This fruit salad recipe is one of my favorites. Ready in just a matter of minutes, it can be easily customized to include your favorite fruits. It’s the perfect side dish to serve if you are hosting a Galentine’s Day brunch, baby shower, or bridal shower. And it pairs perfectly with a quiche or some easy cinnamon-sugar monkey bread.

Ingredients for Simple And Classic Fruit Salad

  • 2 Tablespoons instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 can pineapple chunks (20 ounces), drained
  • 1 can mandarin oranges (15 ounces), drained
  • 2 cups strawberries, sliced
  • 2 bananas, sliced
  • 1 cup red seedless grapes, halved
  • 1 cup blueberries

Other Fruit Suggestions

The fruits listed above are what I used for my salad, but you can add whatever fruits you like! Here are a few other ideas.

  • Green Grapes
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Kiwi
  • Apple
  • Pear

Instructions for Simple and Classic Fruit Salad

First, drain the can of pineapple into a small mixing bowl, and whisk in 2 Tablespoons of the instant pudding mix into the juice.

Next, wash and cut all of your fruit as needed. Then, in a large bowl, combine the remaining fruit and pour the pudding mixture on top. Stir gently to combine.

Cover the salad and let chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Can You Make It Ahead of Time?

You can make this simple and classic fruit salad up to one day in advance. To help keep the salad fresh, I recommend preparing the fruit and the dressing separately. Wash and slice all of the fruit (except the bananas) as needed. Then refrigerate in a covered container. Right before serving add the sliced bananas and toss with the dressing.

Can You Use Frozen Fruit?

Fresh fruit is best for this recipe. Frozen fruit can become mushy and watery once it is thawed so the salad won’t be as good. But there is good news! Since this recipe is so versatile you can use whatever you have on hand.

Tips To Make The Perfect Fruit Salad

  • Use a Variety of Fruit. Just about any fruit will work, so don’t be afraid to mix it up! For the best tasting salad, be sure to use fruits that are fresh and in season.
  • Wait to Add Some Fruit. Fruits such as bananas and some berries (like raspberries and blackberries) are best added right before serving to prevent them from becoming too soft.
  • Have Fun With It. Use a mix of fruits with different colors and textures. Or try cutting your fruit into different, fun shapes.

Why add canned fruit when fresh pineapple and oranges are available. Canned oranges are terrible!

    • You could certainly use fresh if you like. I just find canned to be a bit more affordable, and for this dish, much more convenient and easy to prep.
