Can You Make Cupcakes in an Air Fryer?

Absolutely! Cupcakes are a delicious dessert that can be made in an air fryer quickly and easily. Air fryer cupcakes are one of the most popular treats to make with an air fryer, and they taste just as good- or better- than traditional oven baked cupcakes. The air circulation in the basket will help cook the cupcake evenly, so make sure not to overcrowd the basket.

How to Make Air Fryer Cupcakes

Preparing Your Cupcake Batter

The first step to making perfect cupcakes in your air fryer is preparing your batter. You can use a box cake mix or homemade batter – whichever you prefer. If using a box mix, prepare it according to the instructions on the package. For homemade batters, mix together the wet and dry ingredients until they are just combined – do not overmix! This will ensure that your cupcakes rise nicely when cooked in the air fryer.

Prepping Your Air Fryer

Once you have prepared your cupcake batter, it’s time to preheat your air fryer oven. Preheat it to 330 degrees f. Once preheated, lightly grease your air-fryer basket with cooking spray or butter so that your cupcakes don’t stick when cooked.

Cooking Your Cupcakes

Place three empty paper cupcake liners into the air fryer basket. Scoop the batter using a cookie scoop into each liner filling them 2/3rds of the way full.

After a cooking time of 6 minutes, check if they are done by inserting a toothpick into one of them – if it comes out clean, they are ready! If the tester still has runny batter on it, place the cupcakes back into the air fryer and bake at 3-minute increments until done. When they’re done cooking, remove them from the basket with a spatula or tongs and cool on a cooling rack.

Repeat the process over until you have used all of your batter.

Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before frosting with your favorite frosting recipe, such as chocolate buttercream or vanilla buttercream.

Can you use a metal muffin tin in an air fryer?

It depends on the type of air fryer you have! Generally speaking, metal muffin tins are safe to use in most air fryers as long as they fit and can be securely fitted inside. However, if your air fryer is smaller or doesn’t come with a baking tray, then using a metal muffin tin isn’t really an option then use individual silicone cupcake liners or paper muffin cups.

How to store air fryer cupcakes?

Store your cupcakes at room temperature in an airtight container.

Ingredients

  • Cake Mix 15.25 oz of your choice
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 eggs
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ package of vanilla pudding mix
Instructions

Preheat your air fryer to 330 degrees.
Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the back of the cake box.
Place three empty paper cupcake liners into the pan you are using in the air fryer. Scoop the batter into each liner filling them 2/3rds of the way full.
Set the timer in your air fryer for 6 minutes and bake.
At the 6-minute mark, check the cupcakes. Depending on your oven they may be done or may not be. Using your favorite cake tester, test the middle of the cupcakes. If the tester comes out with a little bit of the cupcake on it, they are done. If the tester still has runny batter on it, place the cupcakes back into the air fryer and bake at 3-minute increments until done.
Once they are done, remove them carefully from the air fryer.
Let them cool and repeat the process over until you have used all of your batter.
While the cupcakes are cooling, make the frosting.
If you are going to pipe it, then add the frosting into a piping bag with your desired tip and pipe the frosting.

What if my air fryer doesn't get as low as 330 degrees?

  • SoUncool SoUncool on Mar 13, 2023

Why would you spend all that time when you can put all 12 in the oven at once? I don’t understand…

Exactly what I was thinking, plus if you check how many this recipe makes, 2 trays of 12 in the oven makes way more sense. I do love my airfryer but not for 3 cupcakes, (I would end up either burning my fingers putting these into preheated thing and then spilling the contents) ha ha! 🇦🇺
