Every year we have a neighborhood block party on July 3rd. The golf course near us has a fireworks show every July 3rd (weather permitting) and we can see the fireworks from our street. Everyone gathers in the cul-de-sac for a potluck, the kids play, the grownups talk, and we enjoy the fireworks show. It is always a nice evening. I was trying to figure out what to make or bring for the potluck. I decided to try making an Independence Day themed cookie cake.
4th of July Cookie Cake Recipe:
For the cookie cake I used my favorite and well tested Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe everyone has a favorite, but I promise once you try this one, you will have a new favorite.
Instead of making individual cookies, I spread out the dough on a jelly roll pan lined with parchment paper. I place the whole pan in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Then, I baked the cookie cake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes
Move the cookie cake with the parchment paper to a cooling rack. Once the cake is completely cool you can decorate it.
Using homemade buttercream or pre packaged icing separate into 3 bowls.
Using food dye mix 1 bowl red, another bowl blue, and leave the 3rd white.
Decorate the cake as an American Flag with 7 red stripes, 6 white, and 50 stars (you'll want the blue area to be larger than you think to 50 dots takes up a lot of space.)
Serve and enjoy!

- 1 1/2 Tbsp Heavy Whipping Cream you may need extra for proper consistency
- 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
Instructions
- Cream the butter in the stand mixer
- Add powdered Sugar 1/2 cup at a time- adding 1/2 c at a time prevents a mess
- Mix in Vanilla Until Buttercream is the consistency you like.
- Separate icing into 3 bowls or icing bags (Ziploc will work too)
- Add red food dye to 2 bowl/bag and blue to the other. Leave 1 bowl or bag with no color, you want to have white for the stars and stripes
- Mix the coloring into the icing until it's reached a shade you like. If you're mixing in a bag, squish the icing and color around.
- In the upper left corner of the cake using a fine tip draw and ice a blue box. Make the box large enough for 50 white dots- representing the stars on the flag
- To the rest of the cake add alternating white and red strips to represent the stripes on the flag. Start with red, then white. You will end with 13 stripes, 7 red, and 6 white.
- Serve and enjoy!
