Double Stuffed Pizza
When you think of pizza, you think of a delicious crust, cheese, some kind of meat and an amazing marinara. Now think of that pizza if it was stuffed with another pizza. That’s what we are talking about when we talk about double stuffed pizza. Its pizza-ception and we are Leonardo DiCaprio about to blow your mind. The only warning I have is that you MUST share this with friends or family. Trust me, eating this in one sitting will cause you to go into a food coma.
Val and I were watching inception one night. We joked about how crazy it was and if we were in the “dream state”. Then we started thinking about what we were going to have for dinner. “Pizza sounds delicious” Valerie said. Then she said “Wait, what if there was a pizza within a pizza”. That is how we came up with the idea of doing the double stuffed pizza!
Not really, we actually just love pizza and when we thought about doing one for Marvelous Munch, we knew we couldn’t do it without going big. So a pizza within a pizza aka double stuffed pizza is what you get.
Role up those sleeves and lets get building this double stuffed pizza!
Building the sauce is going to be easy. Over medium heat, add in a little bit of olive oil (enough to coat the bottom). Then throw in your garlic and onion and let cook until onions start to become translucent. Add in your San Marzano tomatoes and mix together. After a couple of minutes letting that cook, throw in the remaining ingredients and mix. Let cook for another couple of minutes and throw everything into a blender (or use and immersion blender) and blend until smooth.
Building the pizza is the fun part. Mix all those types of cheese up into a bowl and set aside. Put down olive oil on your sheet pan to coat the bottom. Throw down some garlic salt on there to give the bottom of the crust a nice flavor. Take the first layer of dough and put that down on the pan and throw in the oven at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Once the bottom layer of dough is cooked, bring it out and start to stacking. Put on the sauce first, then half of the cheese mixture followed by prosciutto. If you were making a one layer pizza, we might stop there, but this is the double stuffed pizza! Now, add on the second layer of dough, stretch it out to cover the whole bottom layer and then add more sauce, salami, pepperoni, and top with the cheese. Optionally you can chop up some more onion and throw that on top as well. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 400.
Double Stuffed Pizza
- 3 cloves garlic
- ¼ yellow onion diced
- 1 can san Marzano tomatoes
- 6 sprigs basil
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 2 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cans pizza dough we used pillsbury
- 1½ cup pepper jack shredded
- 1½ cup mozzarella shredded
- 1½ cup parmesan cheese shredded
- Grab a sauce pan and put on medium heat
- Coat bottom of pan with olive oil and throw in garlic and onions
- Once onions start to become translucent, add in can of tomatoes and mix
- Let cook for 3-5 minutes while stirring occassionaly
- Add in remaining ingredients to the sauce and stir in
- Lower heat to low and let simmer for another 3-5 minutes
- Grab Immersion blender and blend until smooth. (Or add all ingredients into blender and blend until smooth)
- Combine all the cheese into a bowl and mix up
- Turn oven on to 400° and grab your sheet pan
- Coat sheet pan with olive oil on the bottom (optional: add a sprinkling of garlic salt in with the olive oil for a delicious bottom crust)
- Stretch out first pizza dough over sheet pan and throw the pan in the oven for 5 minutes to get bottom crust started
- After 5 minutes remove from oven and start stacking on the ingredients
- Add Sauce to bottom crust
- Then half of the cheese mixture
- Prosciutto on top of the cheese
- Then we add the second layer of dough. Stretch it out ontop to cover the bottom layer
- Ontop of the dough, we add another layer of sauce
- Pepperoni and Salami go on next
- Remaining cheese to top it all off
- Optionally: you can chop up some more yellow onion and toss it on top like we did for an extra kick of flavor
