Ingredients needed and substitutions
Only 5 simple ingredients needed...

Greek Yogurt - For this recipe I used siggi's plain greek yogurt and added honey for sweetness. You can use flavored greek yogurt like vanilla or even strawberry or blueberry and make frozen yogurt blueberry bites.

Honey - Pure honey was used to make this strawberry yogurt bite recipe. If you prefer to use a vegan sweetener you can swap the honey for maple syrup or agave nectar.

Fresh Strawberries - Fresh sliced strawberries are the perfect fruit for these healthy snacks but if you don't like strawberries feel free to swap with your favorite fruit. Sliced banana mixed with the strawberry makes incredibly yummy strawberry banana bites. Don't be afraid to try different fruits.

Chocolate Chips - I used Nestle Tollhouse semi-sweet mini chocolate chips for this recipe. A low sugar gluten free alternative would be Lily's Dark Chocolate Chips. You can even make a white chocolate covered yogurt bite with Lily's White Chocolate Baking Chips.

Coconut Oil - Better Body Foods Coconut Oil was used for these chocolate covered yogurt bites.

Bonus Add In - You can easily turn this yogurt bite into a cheesecake bite by adding in a tablespoon of the Sugar Free Jell-O Instant Cheesecake Mix.

After Workout Treat - Add in a scoop of Orgain Vanilla Protein Powder to the yogurt blend and now you have a chocolate covered strawberry energy bite. Perfect for an after workout energy boost.

Recipe FAQ's

How long does it take for yogurt drops to freeze?

The freezing time of Greek yogurt can vary depending on several factors, including the temperature of your freezer, the size of the dollops, and the consistency of the yogurt. In a typical home freezer set to around 0°F (-18°C), small dollops of Greek yogurt can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to freeze solid.

Is frozen yogurt healthier than ice cream?

The healthiness of frozen yogurt or ice cream ultimately depends on the specific ingredients used, portion sizes, and your overall dietary context. If you're looking for a healthier option, you may consider choosing frozen yogurt made with low-fat or non-fat yogurt, and opt for toppings like fresh fruits instead of high-sugar options.

What are the healthiest frozen yogurt toppings and mix ins?

Fresh fruits: Add a variety of fresh fruits like berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), sliced bananas, diced mangoes, or chopped peaches. They provide natural sweetness and are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Nuts and seeds: Sprinkle some chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, pistachios) or seeds (chia seeds, flaxseeds) on top. They add a delightful crunch and are rich in healthy fats, protein, and fiber.

Dark chocolate: Opt for small pieces of dark chocolate or cocoa nibs. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants and may offer some health benefits when consumed in moderation.

Expert Tips

  • Choose ripe and fresh fruits: Opt for fruits that are in season and at their peak ripeness for the best flavor and texture.
  • Use Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is thick, creamy, and has a higher protein content, making it ideal for frozen yogurt bite.
  • Select a good quality chocolate: dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content is great for a rich and intense flavor.
  • Melt chocolate properly: Use a double boiler or microwave in short intervals, stirring frequently to prevent overheating and burning.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper: This will make it easier to remove the frozen yogurt bites once they're set.
  • Cut fruits into bite-sized pieces: Ensure the fruit pieces are small enough to fit comfortably on the yogurt bites.
  • Choose a variety of fruits: Experiment with different fruits like strawberries, bananas, blueberries, and raspberries for a colorful assortment.
  • Use a silicone mold or mini muffin tin: Pour the yogurt into a silicone mold or mini muffin tin to create uniform frozen yogurt bites.
  • Add a touch of sweetness: If desired, sweeten the yogurt by adding a small amount of honey or agave syrup to balance the tartness.
  • Freeze until firm: Place the molds or muffin tin in the freezer until the yogurt bites are completely frozen, usually for a minimum of 2-3 hours.
