Cookies are great snacks any time of the year but can make colder days feel much warmer. Not only that, but decorating cookies is also a wonderful Christmas activity to do with the kids. As the colder months are approaching, try this melting snowman cookie making activity! It is super easy to do and will definitely create a welcoming atmosphere for the holiday season.

Side note; I’m no stranger to making snowman snacks. I’ve previously made Halloween snowman snacks that kids love to make and to share! Make sure to come back and check those treats out too! You can even watch a quick video on how to make them.

Here is what you will need:

  • Sugar Cookies (both frozen and homemade ones will work)
  • White icing (any kind of icing is fine)
  • Marshmallows
  • M&Ms
  • Sprinkles
  • Any other decoration of choice
How to make melting snowman cookies

Step 1:

Bake cookies according to the type you are using. Pre made refrigerated sugar cookies are the easiest to use. Once the cookies are baked, lay them out on a cookie rack and allow them to cool.

Step 2:

While the cookies are cooling down, go ahead and make the icing. If you prefer to use store-bought icing this step will not be necessary.

Make sure the icing is white or off white to match the color of the marshmallows.

For ease of handling in the next steps, allow the icing to chill in the refrigerator for a little while so it does not become too runny.

Step 3:

Once the cookies are cool, using a piping bag or a spatula to spread the icing on top of the sugar cookie. It’s not necessary to make the icing neat since it is supposed to be the ‘melting’ part of the snowman anyways.

Step 4:

Put the marshmallows in a bowl and microwave them for a few seconds. This is a little sensitive as heating them too long make the marshmallows melt and repeated heating could make it crinkle. About five seconds should be enough to slightly melt one of the sides of the marshmallow.

Once slightly melted, stick the molten part onto one side of the top of the cookie.

Step 5:

Using spherical sprinkles or any similar food decoration, attach two ‘eyes’ onto the front of the marshmallow.

You could also do this using a different colored icing or even mini M&Ms.

Step 6:

Using sprinkles or colored icing, make the ‘hands’ of the snowman.

Step 7:

For the nose, use orange sprinkle or a similar candy.

Step 8:

Place a couple of M&Ms in a line onto the icing to create the buttons for the snowman.

Use any other decoration you want to make hats or scarves for the snowman or just leave is as it is.

There you have it, a melting snowman cookie! You could even try putting your own spin to it by using a different color of marshmallow and a similar icing color. Whatever version you choose to make, this activity will be a great way to spend some quality family time while also creating a delicious dessert around the Christmas season.
