Heart Shaped Stuffed French Toast

I’m not sure if you know this about me, but I used to cook breakfast for 12 people every Saturday and Sunday. This stuffed french toast was one of my go-to recipes because it’s quick and so delicious.

I decided to give it a twist and make it a fun Valentines recipe. You can do part of the recipe the day before so it only takes about 10 minutes in the morning.

This was always a guest favorite because it’s sweet, but not too sweet. It’s perfect when paired with either Canadian bacon or regular bacon (which I love to bake in my Smart Oven). This isn’t related to french toast, but if you aren’t making your bacon in the oven, you should really give it a try.

Ingredients for Stuffed French Toast

This recipe can be made with any type of bread. I have also made it using croissants and it’s delicious. Since I wanted to cut out a heart shape, I used sourdough bread. Sourdough is firm enough to hold up to being cut. Be sure not to use a firm bread if you plant to cut into hearts.


It’s better to use bread that isn’t fresh. If it’s a little bit dried out it tends to absorb more of the egg mixture, which gives you a richer french toast.


  • Sourdough bread – 2 slices per heart
  • 1 egg for every 2 sandwiches
  • 1/4 cup whole milk for every 2 sandwiches (you can use some cream for a richer french toast)
  • dash of vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1-2 tablespoon of cream cheese per sandwich
  • 1 tablespoon of jam, your choice, per sandwich
  • powdered sugar (or syrup if you prefer)
  • Butter
  • Heart shaped cookie cutter


How to make stuffed french toast

Making stuffed french toast is really like making a sandwich. You can make the “sandwiches” ahead of time and just grill/saute them right before you are ready to eat. This recipe can easily be scaled to the number of people you are serving.


Step 1 – Spread cream cheese and jam between two slices of bread. You can refrigerate at this point if you want. You don’t have to spread filling all the way to the edges because you are going to cut away the edges.

Step 2 – Cut the heart out of the sandwich.

Step 3 – Scramble one egg for every two sandwiches. Add 1/4 cup of milk (or milk and cream) per egg. Sprinkle in cinnamon and vanilla. Dunk the heart sandwiches into the egg mixture.

Step 4 – Heat butter in a skillet. Saute the heart sandwiches until browned and serve with powdered sugar sprinkled over the top. You can serve with syrup, but they are sweet without it.
