Brioche Loaf French Toast

French toast is awesome.


French toast made with a Brioche loaf? Heavenly.


Isn’t French toast so easy to make? Pancakes are great too, but seriously- mixing some eggs and milk in a bowl and dipping bread into it takes just a little less time, and way fewer ingredients. Plus, if you find bread on clearance, even better!


But I’ve seen people make French toast with Brioche bread, and I knew I had to give it a try. I typically use regular sandwich bread, but sometimes that bread is so thin it falls apart when I dip it into the egg mixture. The Sara Lee Artesano works well, but Brioche, man.

I went to Aldi and picked up the only kind they had- Chocolate chip. And I wasn’t even mad.


The slices are thick, and they even felt easier to cook on the griddle. I dunno, it just browned better.


And adding maple syrup when it’s done? Pure perfection. You don’t even need a lot, especially if you get the bread with chocolate chips.


At $3.49 per loaf, this would probably just be an occasional treat. But I highly recommend trying this at least once!

Is French toast healthy?


Well, at its core, French toast is simply bread dipped in eggs and milk. You get protein and fat from the eggs and milk, so it all depends on what kind of bread you use.


Whole wheat bread gives more fiber and protein, and homemade bread contains fewer ingredients. So yes, I’d consider French toast part of a healthy breakfast!


I’d recommend using just a tiny bit of maple syrup, though. I use a tablespoon, and sometimes even that is too much. Pure maple syrup is super sweet, so a little bit goes a long way.

Does french toast freeze well?


Absolutely! I freeze mine all the time.


Once your French toast cools completely, lay them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and stick that in the freezer. And when they’re completely frozen, just transfer to a gallon-sized freezer bag. That’s it!


When you’re ready to eat, you can defrost in the microwave or put in your toaster oven. Start with about a minute, then check to see if it’s hot.

Ingredients

  • 12 slices Brioche bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions

Preheat a griddle or large pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
Dip each slice of bread in the egg mixture and cook 1-2 minutes each side until all slices are fully browned on both sides.
Tips
  • To freeze, lay each slice flat on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and place in the freezer. Once completely frozen, transfer to a gallon-sized freezer bag.
  • To reheat from frozen, defrost in the microwave or cook in a toaster oven, 1-2 minutes until fully heated.
