I honestly can't even believe something like a chocolate cake milkshake (or chocolate cake shake) exists. It's so good it should be illegal. Luckily, for the human race, it is not. It's creamy, it's decadent, and the best part is sucking up the chocolate cake and icing through the straw. Life doesn't get any better, seriously. Read on if you need more convincing about why you should make this.

How does chocolate cake shake actually exist. What did we do to deserve such happiness?

How to Make a Chocolate Cake Milkshake

This totally could not be easier, although with that being said, you do have to make a chocolate cake to start with. It's the perfect way to use up the cake that's been sitting on the counter for a day too long, and is starting to get a tiny bit dry. Not to worry, the milkshake will take care of that. You can also totally use a piece of store bought cake for this recipe.

Once you've got the cake taken care of, let's add all the ingredients to a blender.

Ingredients

  • Chocolate cake
  • Milk (to thin it all out and make it drinkable)
  • Vanilla ice cream (the backbone of all milkshakes)

So, blend this stuff up, and pour into a large glass. Next up is the toppings.

Toppings

  • Homemade Whipped Cream (recipe below)
  • Chocolate Sauce
  • Whipped Cream
  • Sprinkles
  • Another (?) slice of chocolate cake
  • Maraschino cherry

These are all optional, but I mean, it's not exactly like we're calorie counting on this one right? This is a chocolate cake shake. Who doesn't want a milkshake that has a giant slice of cake on top of it? Why not indulge.

How to Make the Best Milkshake

This is of course, a matter of personal taste, but my ratio for the best milkshake is 4-5 scoops of ice cream to one cup of milk. This leaves the milkshake drinkable, but still delightfully creaming. The easiest way to figure out what you like is to experiment. Add a scoop of ice cream, add some milk, see if you like that texture. Obviously the easiest way to thicken a milkshake is to add more ice cream, while adding milk will help you thin it out.

Obviously, whipped cream and some kind of sundae sauce also makes the dream work.

Can you Make a Milkshake without Ice Cream?

While I would deeply, deeply question why you would choose to do this - maybe you ran out. Maybe you are desperate. Maybe there is a raging snowstorm outside and you can't leave the house and all you want is chocolate cake shake. You can do it. Basically, you create a sort-of ice cream substitute with ice cubes, cream and sugar.

Variations

This is a pretty basic recipe, so if you want to switch it up, by all means experiment! Birthday cake milkshakes are pretty popular. Want chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla? You do you. For me personally, I just love the contrast between the chocolate cake and the vanilla ice cream.

A Chocolate Cake Milkshake with Alcohol

If you've made it too this section, let's be best friends. Because yes, you can totally add alcohol to this. I would definitely give Irish Cream Liquor a try, there's no way that creamy flavour and texture doesn't mix well with chocolate cake and ice cream. I would try a coffee liqueur as well!
