How to make homemade bubble tea in an Instant Pot or on the stove top. I prefer the Instant Pot method because it takes less time, but you can also make it on the stove.

Bubble tea is also called boba tea or milk tea. To make it, you'll need tapioca pearls. Then you'll add tea and milk. You can use black tea, green tea, or oolong tea.

This is a delicious and creamy drink. The pearls make it creamy, and there's brown sugar for extra sweetness. I have more information about the tapioca pearls and the origin of the drink in my how to make homemade bubble tea post.

The Instant Pot method is easier to make, but you can also make it on the stove.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of wufu yuan black tapioca pearls
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 2 cups of water
  • 8 earl grey tea bags
  • 4 cups of water
  • 3/4 cup of milk
Instructions

To make Instant Pot boba tea, place the boba pearls in the Instant Pot with 2 cups of water. Close the lid and pressure valve. Cook at high pressure for 5 minutes. Release the pressure when finished.
To make iced boba tea on the stove, in a large sauce pan, heat 8 cups of water until boiling. Add 1 cup of tapioca pearls and stir gently. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 40 minutes. Stir occasionally. Remove the pan from heat and cover. Let sit for 20 minutes.
Drain and rinse the pearls. Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and stir well.
Set the Instant Pot to sauté or use a medium sized pan. Add 4 cups of water and the tea bags. Bring the tea to a boil and remove tea bags. Add the rest of the brown sugar and stir in the milk
In a glass, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup boba pearls and add ice. Pour the tea and milk mixture over the ice.
Tips
  • The cooked pearls will last about 4 hours, so don't save them for later. The pearls can be a choking hazard, so don't give to anyone with swallowing problems.
