Sweet Tea Julep

4 cups
10 min

A marriage of two classic Southern drinks, the mint julep and sweet tea for your Derby party!

This refreshing cocktail is ideal to enjoy while watching the Kentucky Derby or for summer time sipping! You can make it by the pitcher and let guests serve themselves.

Here are the ingredients for (4) 1 cup servings:

  • ½ cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves
  • 1 lemon sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups cold sweetened tea
  • 1 cup bourbon
  • Crushed ice
  • Garnish: fresh mint sprigs

Muddle cut or torn mint leaves with sugar in a 2-qt. pitcher with back of spoon to release mint oils and flavor. When you begin to smell the mint as it breaks down and see the sugar start to turn slightly green, you're ready to add your tea.

Stir in tea and bourbon and slice your lemon.

Serve over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs, if desired.

  • Too funny! I clicked on the photo and started scrolling, then I knew it was you! Have prepared many of your recipes and are always wonderful. Only thing I did here was lessen the sugar for the tea for my group. Will be making an appearance on our Friday night happy hour(s) / dinner. Many times we do a bunch of appetizers and turn it into a smorgasbord/ tapas / buffet / grazing table set up. Have enough hearty, filling bites so none of us have to go home and cook. Thanks for sharing.
