These honey butter sourdough croutons are the best things to happen in your kitchen since the last time you made sourdough croutons.

If you're not sure what croutons are, they're simply small cubes of bread that have been toasted and seasoned. They are the star garnish for soups and salads or appetizers when served with cheese and other dippers. In short: they're good!

Why this sourdough croutons recipe works!

This sourdough croutons recipe works because you can easily adjust it to what you have on hand.

Have a few cloves of garlic? Add those in! Do you have rye bread instead of sourdough? That will be ok! This recipe is more of a technique, that you can adjust once you get the hang of it.

Ingredients

Sourdough Bread

If you didn't get on the sourdough train in 2020, have no fear! Grab a loaf of sourdough bread from your local grocery store or farmers market and use it for this recipe. We love using sourdough because it has a more complex flavor than traditional sandwich bread. This recipe is also great with any bread around the house! If you want to make this recipe but don't have any sourdough on hand, use whatever kind of bread you like.

Unsalted butter

We recommend using unsalted butter because it allows you to control how much salt goes into each bite. You can always add more salt later on if you'd like. Melted unsalted butter is excellent for this recipe because its flavor is milder than salted butter and won't overpower the other ingredients. If you don't have unsalted butter, make sure to adjust your seasonings accordingly so they're not too salty or spicy.

Local honey

We recommend using local honey so that your croutons have unique flavors based on where they were made. You can find local love at most grocery stores or even at some farmers' markets if you're lucky enough to live near one! Amazon has an endless supply of different types of honey available for delivery right to your door if all else fails!

Olive oil

Olive oil is an essential element of this recipe because it helps create a crispy exterior on the crouton while keeping them soft inside!

Salt and pepper

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Combine melted butter, and olive oil in a small bowl. Sprinkle this mixture over the bread cubes and toss evenly to coat.

Then, spread them out on a sheet tray. Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly golden brown and crisp, occasionally stirring so that they don't burn.

If you can help not snacking on them, store them in an airtight container at room temperature once they cool down completely. These are good for up to five days or freeze for three months if you have more croutons than you can use right away!

Expert tips for making croutons

Use a spatula or pancake turner to flip and cook until golden brown on both sides.

Servings suggestions

These honey butter sourdough croutons are the perfect addition to any meal! You can use these as a topping for soup, a great snack, or even as a garnish for your favorite dessert. You can make them in three different ways:

Salad

First, you can cut them into cubes and mix them into your salad greens. Dress your greens with this pesto recipe and you've got yourself a good summer meal. This will add some crunch and sweetness to your greens.

Dip

Second, you can make a dip by mixing some of the melted butter with dijon mustard and/or honey. Then heat it until it's melted and pour it over the croutons. The warmth of the melted butter will allow the flavors to blend perfectly!

Appetizer

Finally, if you want something more substantial, try making these as an appetizer instead of just using them for salads or soups. Baked with garlic and Parmesan cheese—these are perfect as an appetizer or as part of an antipasto platter. Just sprinkle some cheese over the top before baking, and you'll have an appetizer that everyone will love!

Variations

Here are three ways you can adjust this recipe or make a different version:

Bread

Use different types of bread: try ciabatta, baguette, or another type of sourdough bread.

Change up your spices

Use different spices and toppings: try olive oil and sea salt instead of honey butter, or add herbs like thyme or rosemary for an extra flavor boost.

Super-sized croutons

Make them bigger! You can make these into larger croutons by cutting the pieces before baking them off in the oven.

The recipe ingredients do not mention garlic. The directions do not mention honey. Can you explain the recipe.

    Thanks
