When I was growing up, "salad" consisted of a wedge of iceberg lettuce with Thousand Island dressing on top. Boy have times changed. Now salad isn't just something you eat when you're dieting or a small side dish; it's an experience!

Here are six super simple hacks to make your salad experience even better.

Purchase prepackaged, prewashed greens

It's okay. No one will judge you if you don't cut and wash your greens.

Use simple dressings

The variety of salad dressings is overwhelming. Make your own dressing such as the Poppy Seed list below or just use lemon juice and oil. Let the flavors of the salad come through.

Chop/shred into small, bite-size pieces.

No one wants to be in a knife fight with their salad.

Use berries, nuts, cheese, eggs, French fries, meat, fish...

You're not boring so why should your salad be?

A salad doesn't need lettuce

The Oxford Dictionary definition of a salad is "a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked ingredients..."

Use a big bowl - hashtag freeyoursalad

Don't cram everything into a cereal bowl or worse, a jar. Let your salad breath. It also gives you a chance to enjoy the beauty of this thing you created.

Poppy Seed Dressing
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 2 teaspoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
Healthy Green Bean Salad
  • 1 pound fresh green beans
  • 1/4 onion, sliced matchstick style
  • 3 carrots, sliced matchstick style
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced matchstick style
  • grape or cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/2 cup Feta, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts or sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 lemon
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
Spinach Salad with Fruit
  • Fresh baby spinach
  • blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, any kind of berries
  • walnuts
  • Feta
  • Poppy Seed dressing
Poppy Seed Dressing
Add all of the ingredients into a container with a tight fitting lid. I used a water bottle.
Shake until combine.
Pour on salad immediately or make sure dressing is well shaken before putting on salad.
Healthy Green Bean Salad
Steam green beans.
After steaming, cold shock by running under cold water and drain well.
Place beans in a bowl and add additional ingredients.
Drizzle oil and the juice of lemon.
Combine well.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Place all ingredients into a large bowl
Add poppy seed dressing

    AND I often eat individual ingredients alone- NEVER forget sitting in the break room when a doc walked by and said ‘ you gonna eat that pepper like an apple ? SO of course next time I walked by him eating an apple while reading a chart, I HAD to say “ you gonna eat that apple like a pepper ? to which he said “ touché “

    Allergic to poppy seeds! I like a lite vinaigrette dressing such as champagne or raspberry vinaigrette. Don't forget to throw your proteins on top which could be imitation crab sticks, cooked salmon, grilled chicken, flake tuna or even black eyed peas right out of a can. I also use boiled eggs often and have a little machine that steams 6 at a time which is so easy! I could live on salads!
