Baked donuts are so easy to make – you will NOT believe how quickly you can have this delicious treat. From start to finish these homemade donuts will take you under 30 minutes to make including baking time!

Plus this chocolate glaze recipe is so simple and easy to make you’ll want to put it on everything.

If you love classic donuts, you’ll probably asking yourself right now:

What are baked donuts?

Baked donuts are a great alternative to fried donuts. They are more similar to cake and are baked in a donut pan as opposed to deep frying the yeast dough of a classic donut in hot oil.

The fact that they’re baked not fried makes people always ask:

Are baked donuts healthy?

They are definitely healthier than fried donuts, but I wouldn’t necessarily say they are “healthy” 😅… But I bet that with the right substitutions you can make baked donuts healthier 🙂

Ingredients
For the Donuts
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup canola oil
For the Chocolate Glaze
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • 2-4 Tablespoons hot water
Topping
  • Colored Sprinkles as desired
Instructions
Make the Donuts
Pre-heat oven to 350°. Spray 2 donut pans with non-stick baking spray.
In a large mixing bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.
Add egg, sour cream and vanilla and mix until just combined.
Gradually pour in oil while mixing to combine.
Transfer the batter to a piping bag or a large zip top bag. Cut the bottom corner off only when ready to pipe.
Pipe the batter into the donut pans filling about ¾ of the way to the top.
Bake for 10-12 minutes until the donuts are baked through. Let cool before taking out of the pan.
Make the Chocolate Glaze
In a small mixing bowl mix all the ingredients together adding hot water as needed to get to get a spreadable consistency, not too thick, but not too thin.
If it became too thin add a teaspoon at a time of confectioners sugar until you reach desired consistency.
Decorate the Donuts
When the donuts are completely cool, carefully remove from the pan.
Using the back of a large piping tip cut out the circle of the donuts to make them look more like donuts.
Using a spoon spread chocolate glaze on the donuts and immediately top with sprinkles.
Happy Baking!
Tips
  • To make these in advance I recommend baking the donuts and freezing them before glazing.
  • When ready to serve defrost the donuts and prepare the glaze right before serving and decorate.
  • You can top these donuts with any glaze or toppings you like.
