Introduction:Here is my recipe for Healthier and Easy One Pot Sloppy Joes. Recently, in November of 2021, I decided to begin a concerted effort to eat healthier and hopefully lose some weight. I have always been on the slim side, but menopause had definitely been taking its toll on my mid-section. I thought it might be helpful and fun for me to share what’s starting to work on my healthy weight loss journey.

By the age of 65, you would have to have been living under a rock to not know that certain weight loss tips would be helpful. Suggestions like drinking more water, stopping sodas, eating more fruits and vegetables, etc. are all valid. I had read (and employed) all those tips, and still wasn’t really moving the needle in the direction I wanted. So I found a coach to help me really put all the details together in such a way that sustainable weight loss could occur.

I have been working with Dr. Lisa Oldson (@lisaoldsonmd). Take a look at her bio on Instagram. Her latest program is a one-year group program that is all on Zoom. Registration for this program closes this Friday. I am not at all reimbursed by Dr. Oldson. I just think she has lots of great and practical tips and tricks for weight loss. As a retired dermatologist, I like that Dr. Oldson is a board-certified internist and obesity medicine doctor who is also a certified life coach and weight loss coach! Trust me she uses all those certifications when she coaches me!

Healthier and Easy One Pot Sloppy JoesThis recipe for healthier and easy one pot sloppy joes is made healthier by choosing better ingredients. Instead of ground chuck which is higher in saturated fat, I used grass-fed lean ground beef and ground turkey. Because of all the seasonings, once the meats are browned and then simmered with all the rest of the recipe, you won’t miss all the extra fat. I promise!

Also instead of regular ketchup, I use Heinz organic ketchup which has no high fructose corn syrup. Instead of Heinz chili sauce, I used Trader Joe’s chili sauce as it has no corn syrup. Here’s an article outlining why you want to avoid high fructose corn syrup.

I typically double or even triple this recipe when I make it as I then divide it into glass snap ware containers to freeze for another day.

Healthier and Easy One Pot Sloppy Joes

Here’s how I made this:

Ingredients:

-One pound grass-fed lean ground beef (90% lean)

-One pound ground turkey

-One green and one red pepper, finely diced

-Two ribs of celery, finely diced

-Two small yellow onions, finely diced

-1 1/2 tsp dried thyme leaves

-12 ounces chili sauce (I use Trader Joe’s sweet chili sauce)

-12 ounces of beer (I used Corona)

-5 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

-1 Tablespoon Tabasco sauce

-6 Tablespoons yellow mustard

-3 Tablespoons ketchup (I use Heinz organic ketchup)

Steps:

  1. Put the ground beef, trukey, peppers, celery, onion in a Dutch oven. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until the meat is browned and the veggies are softened. Drain off off any accumulated fat and discard.
  2. Add to this mixture the rest of the ingredients. Don’t worry that the mixture is too runny. Just simmer all these ingredients for about 20-30 minutes over low medium heat, stirring every few minutes to avoid burning.
  3. Simmer the mixture until most of the liquid is absorbed. Salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Enjoy served just in a bowl with a roll on the side or serve on top of a whole grain hamburger bun.
