If you’re a fan of sloppy joes, you will love my Secret Ingredient for the Best Burger recipe!

This old fashioned sloppy joes recipe has juicy ground meat sautéed with onions and peppers in a zesty sauce on top of Texas toast bread. I think Texas toast is the best bread for sloppy joes because it’s thick and crisp on the outside and soft on the inside to soak up all the homemade sloppy joes sauce. An original sloppy joes recipe has to be a little messy, right?

My husband likes to make a Texas toast sandwich while I prefer to have open faced sloppy joes. I also prefer to eat my sloppy joes with cheese. Texas toast sloppy joes taste delicious either way. Old Fashioned Sloppy Joes are a family favorite.

Homemade Sloppy Joes on Texas Toast Ingredients:

  • Ground meat – Sloppy Joes are traditionally made with ground beef, but I love ground turkey sloppy joes and ground chicken sloppy joes as well. This recipe tastes great with any ground meat you want to use. You can make it a healthy sloppy joe by using a meat low in fat.
  • Onion and bell pepper – I prefer to use red bell peppers in this recipe.
  • Tomato sauce – This sloppy joes recipe without ketchup uses tomato sauce to flavor the sauce instead.
  • Garlic and spices – marjoram, chili powder, and paprika
  • Flavorings for the sloppy joes sauce – Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar, yellow mustard, and brown sugar. Making sloppy joes with brown sugar in combination with these sauces and vinegar will give your homemade sloppy joe seasoning a zesty, sweet and savory taste.
  • Texas toast – You can’t have Texas toast sloppy joes without the Texas toast! I love to serve this sloppy joe on garlic Texas toast. This is one of my favorite recipes with Texas toast!

How to Make Homemade Sloppy Joes on Texas Toast

If you want low sodium sloppy joes, you have to stay away from the canned mix. It’s easy to make your own sloppy joes sauce and, personally, I think it tastes much better. I love making sloppy joes for a crowd because this recipe is simple to make and is always a hit.

First, preheat the oven and cook Texas toast according to package directions. Next, brown the ground meat. I like to make sloppy joes with ground chicken or sloppy joes with ground turkey, but ground beef is traditionally used.

Once the meat has browned, add in the onions, peppers, and spices and cook on medium heat until the vegetables have softened. Drain meat, if necessary.

Step 1: brown ground meat.
Step 2: add onions and peppers to browned meat.
Step 3: add spices and sauté on medium high heat.

Then, add the tomato sauce and flavorings to the ground meat and vegetables. Making sloppy joes without ketchup will give you the opportunity to create a unique sweet and savory flavor combination.

Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes until the consistency of the sauce has thickened up. While the sloppy joes sauce is simmering, cook the frozen Texas toast in the oven according to package directions.

Step 4: add liquid ingredients and bring to a boil then simmer.
Step 5: after simmering for 20 minutes, the sloppy joes sauce should be this consistency.

Finally, it’s time to assemble and eat! When you assemble these Texas toast sloppy joes, you can use two pieces of bread to make a sandwich or make an open faced sloppy joe.

I love sloppy joes with cheese, so I always had a piece of cheddar cheese on top or sprinkle shredded cheddar on top of the warm meat. Other sloppy joe toppings aren’t necessary, but assembling sandwiches is always a personal choice.
