  • Instead of Greek Compound Butter you can use unsalted organic butter.
  • If you don’t want to make my Mediterranean Spice blend you can use any kind of Greek seasoning you have.
  • Gluten Free Panko Breadcrumbs: If you don’t need gluten free panko you can use regular bread crumbs.
  • Lemon: You can use lime instead.
  • Tomatoes: Sundried tomatoes would add a nice flavor.

Recipe Variations for Greek Cod

  • Use sundried tomatoes and kalamata olives to garnish the cod in the last five minutes of cooking.
  • You can bake the cod on the stove top instead of the oven to get a nicely seared fish.

What kind of pan should I use to bake cod?

My favorite kind of pan to use for this baked cod recipe is a simple medium size corningware or any other kind of oven safe dish. You can use a pyrex glass as well.

I don’t like to use disposable aluminum foil. The lemon juice will react with the aluminum releasing chemicals from the metal into the food.

Can You Eat Cod Fish on A Keto Diet?

Yes you can eat cod fish on a keto diet! One 4 ounce serving of cod has:

  • 93 calories
  • 20 grams of protein
  • 1 gram of fat
  • Less than 1 gram of carbs
  • Less than 1 gram of sugar

Since cod is low in carbs it works for a keto diet. Though ideal keto foods are low in carbs and high in fat all while being moderately low in protein.

Cod is much higher in protein than it is in both fat and carbs. So you can go over your protein limit if you eat a lot of cod. Though I would say its’s a safe choice for anyone on a keto diet.

What Does Cod Taste Like?

Cod is a white fish that has a mild, slightly sweet and delicate flavor. It’s not overtly fishy like salmon or tuna. Since this fish lacks a fishy taste and has very little natural flavor it goes well with almost any kind of sauce.

Lots of people who don’t like seafood do enjoy cod. It’s a great fish for kids and adults who are new to seafood. I wouldn’t say it tastes like chicken but it has a similar mild flavor that most people enjoy.

What Spices Can You Put on Cod?

Cod is a mild flavored flakey white fish so it goes well with almost any kind of spice. You can use an Italian blend of fresh or dried herbs with butter. Or you can make a flavorful cod fillet with Cajun spices. Here are some ideas

  • Basil
  • Dill
  • Oregano
  • Paprika
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Bay Leaves
  • Lemon Pepper
  • Peruvian Spice Blend (Buy the blend)
  • Homemade Mediterranean Spice Blend (Get the recipe)

How Do You Cook Cod So That It’s Not So Tough?

Is your cod coming out tough? Here are two foolproof ways to prevent cod from getting tough.

Don’t Over Cook It: How to Tell Cod Fish is Ready

The best way to cook cod so that it isn’t tough is to not over cook it. Cod cooks in about 20 minutes in a 400 degree oven. You’ll know it’s done because you will smell it. Another way to tell it’s done is if you look at the cod the fish will be perfectly white instead of opaque.

Salt Brine the Cod Fillet Before Baking:

Another great way to ensure that the cod is not tough is to salt brine it. Soak the cod in salt water made up of 1/4th cup of salt and 2 cups of warm water.

The sodium will help draw more water into the fish and break down the muscle tissue so that it’s softer. The extra water wwilll prevent the fish from drying out. While the breakdown of muscle tissue will ensure that the fillet is succulent.

Do You Rinse Cod Before Baking?

No you should not rinse cod before baking for two reasons. The first one is that it’s a myth that you should rinse fish before you cook it to get rid of germs. All of the germs on the fish will die off in the oven when the cod is baking.

Also all of the germs on the fish will splash all over your kitchen sink and counters spreading germs. So rinsing the cod before baking it will only spread bacteria that can cause food borne illnesses instead of minimizing risk.

Is Cod Fish Sustainable?

If you want to enjoy seafood without hurting the environment you’re in luck! Cod fish is sustainable. American cod is ethically harvested and raised according to United States regulations.

Cod is not subjected to over fishing and the populations are robustly healthy. There are four big populations of cod in the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, Aleutian Islands, and Pacific coast.

Is Greek Cod Healthy?

Of course there is some risk associated with eating cod fish. All fish has Mercury in their flesh. Mercury is hard to flush from the body and can cause neurological disorders. The smaller the fish the less mercery it has in it. Cod is a small fish that has low amounts of mercury.

Cod is a great source of protein, omega 3 fatty acids vitamins and minerals. It’s naturally anti-inflammatory, gluten free, keto friendly, low carb and unprocessed.

Which Type of Cod Is Healthiest to Buy?

Both cod harvested from the Pacific ocean and Atlantic ocean are healthy. The main difference is that Pacific cod is naturally lower in calories than Atlantic.

If you have heart disease or kidney disease it’s important for you to eat fresh and never frozen cod. Frozen cod is dipped in a salt solution before it’s frozen. This increases the salt content of the fish from 60 miligrams of naturally occurring sodium to 318 miligrams.

How to Cook Cod in the Oven

The best way to cook cod in the oven is to heat the oven to 400 degrees and to cook it for 20 minutes.

What temperature do you need to cook cod in the oven?

the best temperature to cook cod in the oven is between 350 degrees and 400 depending on how hot your oven is or what part of the oven you cooking it in.

It’s best to cook cod in the middle rack of your oven. If you cook it on the top rack lower the temperature to 350 but if you cook it on the bottom you are better off with a higher temperature.

How Can You Tell When Cod is Done Cooking?

The best way to tell when cod is done cooking is when you can smell it! Usually after ten minutes it will fill your kitchen with a lovely aroma.

Another way to tell cod is done cooking is when it turns completely white. Raw cod is opaque but it turns solid white when it’s fully cooked.

How to Store Leftover Cod

I would be shocked if you had any leftover Greek cod at all. This recipe is so tasty that I’m positive that everyone is going to gobble it all up. If you do happen to have some leftovers you should store them in a glass container and not plastic.

If you store the cod in a plastic container the lemon juice could react with the plastic. The acid from the lemon juice will break down the plastic releasing harmful chemicals into the cod. When in doubt, glass is best!

How long does cooked cod last

You can save this cooked cod for up to three days in the fridge. Make sure to store it in an air tight container.

Can you Freeze Leftover Cod?

I would be surprised if you have leftovers but yes you can freeze left over Greek cod. To freeze left over Greek cod place it in a freezer safe ziplock bag. Make sure the bag has no holes in it so it doesn’t leak.

Keep in mind that while the cod will freeze and defrost well, the bread crumbs will be a bit soggy after you thaw them out.

Tips for Making the Best Greek Cod Recipe

  • Don’t add lemon until the last five minutes of cooking because lemon will get bitter when it’s cooked.

How to Reheat Leftover Baked Greek Cod

When it comes to how to do things in the kitchen I trust America’s Test Kitchen the best. America’s Test Kitchen’s suggestion for reheating fish in general is to place the fillets on a wire rack in a rimmed baking dish. Reheat the fish for 15 minutes at 275 degrees in the oven.

Is Cod Gluten Free?

Yes, cod is naturally gluten-free. It is a type of fish and does not contain gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye not in animal flesh.

Simple cod is always gluten free as an ingredient. But if you are talking about cooked cod it could be cooked with other ingredients that contain gluten like panko breadcrumbs. So it’s always important to check for any potential cross-contamination.

Watch out for added ingredients when purchasing pre-packaged or processed cod from supermarkets like Publix, Whole Foods, Target and Aldi, because they might have gluten.

When cooking at home with fresh cod, you can enjoy its gluten-free goodness without any concerns.
