Making Halloween desserts is so much fun. They’re easy which is great but also so festive…even something as simple as dirt pudding cups can feel extra special.

These halloween dirt pudding dessert cups are great to share. It’s nice to have a treat that is all in one cup so you can let everyone grab their own, no need to worry about dishing out servings of a potentially messy treat.

What is dirt pudding?

“Dirt” pudding. Sounds gross, is actually delicious. Dirt pudding is a fun term that is used to describe pudding that is made with crushed Oreos and cream cheese or whipped topping…soemtimes both. Dirt pudding dessert recipes are usually made in layers and created to look like “dirt” thanks to the crumbly texture of the smashed Oreo cookies!

If you have never made or tried dirt pudding now is your chance! The dirt in this recipe is even better because it’s graveyard dirt…spooky level 10/10!

Ingredients needed for Halloween dirt pudding cups:

My version of graveyard dirt pudding cups uses chocolate pudding, milk, Cool Whip, Oreo cookies, gummy worms, Milano cookies, chocolate chips, shortening and then you will also need a piping bag and clear plastic cups.

Use the size cups you like. We used 9 ounce clear plastic cups like these, you can use smaller ones and create more of these dirt pudding cups if you want smaller portions and more servings!

Can I make substitutions?

In the past year or so Oreo has released gluten free cookies…miracle, I know! You can use whatever kind of cookies you need to, they’ll turn out the same.

You can also substitute sugar free pudding and light cool whip if you want to lighten up the recipe a bit. Another option is to use smaller cups as mentioned above which will make more servings and smaller portions!

Be careful if you try to substitute different milk. Insane pudding does not set properly with very low fat milk or with milk alternatives.

If you have had success with such things in the past, go for it, if not (like me) you know that you need to make the pudding with regular milk or use a type of pudding that can be cooked to the consistence you want and then use it in the recipe below!

Kitchen essentials for tasty recipes like this festive Halloween treat:

When you head into the kitchen to make some of these great recipes you’ll want to have the best tools on hand.

I like half sheet baking pans that are quality (hello no noisy pops or sloshed cookie dough from twisting), I line my cookie sheets with silicone baking mats. These are a must when doing dessert recipes and allow when making anything from fish to pork chops in the oven. They make cleanup a breeze and NOTHING sticks to them.

Of course mixing bowls, a mixer, spatula, and some whisks should be on your list if you don’t have ones that you love. I also like to have a set of cooling racks so that my recipes can properly cool before they’re scarfed down by my family!

How to make Halloween dirt pudding dessert cups:

Making these Halloween dirt pudding dessert cups is really simple, I promise. I’ll show you how, step by step, and the end result is so adorable you’ll want to make these as soon as August 1st rolls around…that’s when we can officially start being spooky, right?!

Let’s dive in and get started with these cute and tasty graveyard dirt cups!

In a large mixing bowl combine milk and pudding mixes. It is best to use an electric mixer because this mixture is very thick. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, place Oreos in the food processor and finely chop. If you don’t have a food processor you can place them in a large zip top bag and crush with a rolling pin or mallet.

Remove the pudding mixture from the refrigerator and mix in whipped topping.

Place about ½ and inch of crushed Oreo at the bottom of each cup. Spoon pudding mixture evenly into each cup and top with a thick layer of crushed Oreos. Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Melt chocolate chips and shortening in a microwave safe bowl or double boiler. Place in a piping bag and cut a small hole in the tip. Use the chocolate to decorate Milano cookies like gravestones or ghosts.

Remove the pudding cups from the refrigerator and press the bottom half of a Milano cookie into each cup. Decorate with gummy worms and sprinkles to create a mini “graveyard”

Serve immediately.
