Easy Un-Fried Ice Cream Recipe

This is easy un-fried ice cream recipe is simple to make and tastes just as good as the deep fried version!

When I was in high school, there was a restaurant my friends and I would go to, usually for things like our homecoming dances or as a special treat, that served fried ice cream. I had never had it before then and I haven’t had it since then, but it was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. There’s something about a crunchy, cinnamon sugar coating surrounding delicious vanilla ice cream, all topped with warm chocolate and caramel sauce. How can you get much better than that?!

The only problem is that I don’t know about you, but frying ice cream sounds like a total disaster. I’m sure it’s not as hard as one may think, but I prefer simple recipes that have very few steps. That’s where this un-fried ice cream recipe comes into play! All you need to do is combine a few simple ingredients together, toast them up, roll some ice cream in it and you’re done! You have an elevated dessert that is super easy to make and a really nice treat. Let me show you how to make it!

HOW TO MAKE UN-FRIED ICE CREAM


TOOLS YOU MAY NEED


  • Ice cream scoop
  • Muffin tin or cookie sheet
  • Cast iron skillet
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing spoon
  • Microwave safe dish
  • Kitchen torch (see notes for alternative)


INGREDIENTS


  • Vanilla ice cream
  • 1 1/2 cups rice cereal, slightly crushed
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil


DIRECTIONS FOR HOW TO MAKE UN-FRIED ICE CREAM


Using an ice cream scoop, scoop the vanilla ice cream into balls and place them in a lined muffin tin or on a lined cookie sheet and place in the freezer for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Make cinnamon sugar by combining 1/4 cup of cane sugar and 1-2 tsp of cinnamon.

To a cast iron skillet, add slightly crushed rice cereal, cinnamon sugar and coconut oil and stir to combine.

Place your kitchen torch on a low setting and slowly toast the cereal mixture, stirring as you go, until you’re happy with the toastiness. See the notes below for an alternative method if you don’t have a kitchen torch.

Remove your ice cream balls from the freezer and roll them in the cereal mixture. Don’t be afraid to use your hands to really pack it on.

Either freeze and serve later or top with caramel sauce, homemade chocolate sauce, whipped cream or whatever you like on your un-fried ice cream and serve right away!

NOTES


  • You can use whatever cereal you desire, just be sure it’s crushed. Cinnamon cereal would taste great in this!
  • If you don’t have a kitchen torch, place the cereal mixture on a cookie sheet and place it under the broiler in the oven. Just be sure to stir often and don’t walk away or it will burn.
  • Make the un-fried ice cream balls ahead of time and store them in the freezer until you’re ready to serve them.
  • Instead of scooping the ice cream, try making bars instead by spreading the ice cream in a 9 x 13 pan and sprinkling the cereal mixture on top!
