Ingredients needed and substitutions
Healthy brownie ingredients 2 jars of Justin's almond butter Hersheys unsweetened cocoa powder ripe bananas and chocolate chips

Bananas - For this recipe you need to use over ripe mashed bananas. Mashed ripe bananas in your brownie batter is perfect to add natural sweetness and moisture to your homemade brownies.

Almond Butter - I love using Justin's Maple Almond Butter and Vanilla Almond Butter for this recipe. Feel free to use your favorite nut butter.

Unsweetened Cocoa Powder - Hershey's unsweetened Cocoa Powder works well for this recipe.

Chocolate Chips - Chocolate chips are optional for this recipe but they make a nice addition if you don't mind a couple of extra calories. Nestle semi sweet chocolate chips are delicious and are a perfect chip to add in or for less sugar try Lily's Stevia sweetened chocolate chips.

Recipe FAQ's

Can you substitute bananas for oil in brownies?

If you want to use bananas as a substitute for oil in brownies, you will need to use ripe bananas that are soft and easily mashed. You can use a ratio of 1:1, so for every cup of oil called for in the recipe, use one cup of mashed bananas instead.

How do you store brownies with fruit?

Store brownies at room temperature wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or sealed in an airtight container or a cake carrier.

Is it better to leave brownies out or in a fridge?

Brownies don't need to be refrigerated, but they will last longer if they are. Unless your brownies include more perishable ingredients like fresh fruit or cream cheese frosting, they'll be fine at room temperature as long as they're stored in an airtight container

Expert Tips

  • Use overripe bananas for the best flavor and texture in your brownies.
  • Mash the bananas well with a fork or potato masher to create a smooth consistency.
  • Use a combination of brown and white sugar to give your brownies a rich, caramel-like flavor.
  • Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Use a high-quality cocoa powder for rich chocolate flavor.
  • Mix the dry ingredients together before adding them to the wet ingredients to ensure even distribution.
  • Use a whisk to mix the batter thoroughly and incorporate air for a lighter texture.
  • Don't overmix the batter as it can make the brownies tough.
  • Use a non-stick baking pan or line the pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Bake the brownies in a preheated oven to ensure even cooking.
  • Use a toothpick or cake tester to check if the brownies are done. Insert it into the center of the brownies, and if it comes out clean, they are done.
  • Let the brownies cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting them.
  • Dust the brownies with powdered sugar or cocoa powder for a decorative touch.
  • Add chopped nuts or chocolate chips to the batter for extra texture.
  • Use a combination of semisweet and bittersweet chocolate for a balanced flavor.
  • Don't overbake the brownies as they can become dry and tough.
  • Use a serrated knife to cut the brownies for a clean cut.
  • Serve the brownies warm with a scoop of ice cream for a decadent dessert.
  • Store the brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze the brownies in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Hon am I missing something? You wrote about mixing sugars but there’s no in the recipe I can see and mix the dry ingredients? There’s only the cocoa that I can see. I’d love to try these but just want to make sure I’ve not missed something. 🤪
