Homemade Fresh Purple Plum Pie

Use up those end of summer freshly ripened purple plums in a richly flavorful homemade pie. Slice plums and coat with sugar. Place pie filling in a homemade pie crust and enjoy!
I know I know…when you hear the words “prune pie” you are thinking about a number 2 disaster waiting to happen…but no no, it’s not like that. While a trip to my local grocery store, the fruit department was loaded with fresh peaches and plums. Rather than just buy 1 or 2 of each, I bought a whole pound of each and knew I wanted to make a pie.

For some reason, making pies is one of my go-to fruit recipes…especially for fruit that is a little soft or not as “beautiful” looking. Simply make your own pie crust or buy a premade one, coat the fruit in sugar and bake! It’s that simple!
Plums & Prunes

Did you know that plums are actually prunes? Yep! Prunes are the dried version of plums…like how a grape is actually a raisin when it is dried.

Plums are really good for you! They are full of fiber and help slow down sugar spikes after consuming a lot of carbs. And like you were originally thinking, plums/prunes help with staying regular.

Let’s Make The Pie Together!

Start by washing the plums and slicing into 1/2″ pieces, discarding the pit and any bruised areas.

Place sliced plums in a large bowl and coat with sugar. I use less than an 1/8 cup because the plums are already super sweet!

Pro Tip: before coating with sugar, place the sliced plums in a strainer and allow most of the excess juice to drain off. If you don’t, your pie will be very “runny” on the bottom and have a hard time cooking all of the way through.
Homemade Pie Crust

Every good pie starts with a delicious pie crust. Shamefully, this is my most favorite part of the pie! The buttery, salty, crunchy crust = YUM!!! Here’s my go-to pie crust recipe for every fruit pie!

Making your own pie crust is actually way easier than you would think! The key is ice cold water! Give it a try today, I promise, you’ll be so happy you did!
Place the pie crust in a round pie dish and spoon in plums. Bake at 350°F for 40-50 minutes, or until pie crust is throughly cooked.

Pro Tip: if your pie crust is baking too fast on the edges, wrap the edges of the pie crust in tin foil and return to baking as normal.
Yummy yummy yummy!!! I sure do love this pie!
