Old Fashioned Strawberry Peach Crisp

Summertime is peach season….and strawberry season! So what better way to enjoy both than to combine them into an old fashioned classic like strawberry peach crisp?

With bubbly fruit and a sweet crumb topping, strawberry peach crisp is easy to make and hard to resist.

Top with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of whipped topping, and enjoy a bowl (or two) of pure dessert heaven!

Ingredients For Old Fashioned Strawberry Peach Crisp

  • 6-8 medium peaches (blanched, peeled, and sliced)
  • 2 cups strawberries (sliced)
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (cut into small cubes)
  • 3/4 cup quick-cooking oats

Instructions For Old Fashioned Strawberry Peach Crisp

First, preheat your oven to 375℉. Next, grease an 8 X 11-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick baking spray and set it aside while you blanch and peel your peaches.

Many places have farms where you can pick your own peaches, or local farmers’ markets are always a good option for buying fresh seasonal fruit. Of course, peaches from the produce section at your local grocery store are just fine too.

TIP: I used fresh fruit, but if you are using frozen fruit, be sure to fully thaw, drain, and dab it with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

How To Blanch And Peel Peaches

Blanching and peeling peaches may seem intimidating, but I promise you it’s easy! First, fill a large stockpot with water and bring it to a boil. You will also need a large mixing bowl filled with ice water.

While the water comes to a boil, use a paring knife to cut an “x” in the bottom of each peach. (Be careful not to cut the peach too deep and hurt the flesh.) Use a slotted spoon to place the peaches in the boiling water and oil each peach for 30 seconds to one minute.

TIP: Do not boil the peaches for for too long, or they will start to cook.

When done, immediately place the peaches in the ice water. This will shock the peaches and stop the cooking process. When the peaches are cool, use a paring knife to catch the corner of the skin at the base of the “x’. Peel towards the stem, and the skin should come off with ease.

How To Mix The Fruit Filling

To make the fruit filling for old-fashioned strawberry peach crisp, start but cutting and slicing your peaches. Use a paring knife to cut along the crease of the peach. Then twist to separate, remove the pit, and slice.

NOTE: For this recipe, Freestone peaches work best. If you are using Clingstone peaches, cut around the pit and then slice.

Next, wash and slice the strawberries. I used a strawberry huller to remove the stems and my egg slicer to speed up the prep time.

Then, stir together the peaches, strawberries, lemon juice, and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl. Pour the fruit filling into the baking dish and set it aside.

How To Make the Crumb Topping

Want to know my secret tip for the easiest way to make a crumb topping? Use a food processer! To make the topping, add the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter to your food processor. Then, use the pulse setting to mix together the ingredients until the topping resembles pea-sized pieces.

When done, carefully transfer the mixture to a separate mixing bowl. Stir in the oats until combined and crumbly, and sprinkle the crumb topping over the peaches and berries.

TIP: If you do not have a food processor (or you’re looking for a good forearm workout), you can also use a pastry blender to cut the butter into the dry ingredients.

Baking and Serving the Strawberry Peach Crisp

Place your baking dish in the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the strawberry peach crisp is bubbly and the crumb topping is golden brown.

Cool slightly before serving.

Scoop into bowls and serve with vanilla bean ice cream or whipped topping and enjoy!

The yum factor of the crisp is off the charts!

Even my husband (who isn’t a big fan of sweets) couldn’t stop raving about it.

It’s safe to say that this old fashioned strawberry peach crisp is going to be served on repeat at our house all summer long.
