Brief History of Tequila

Tequila was North America’s First Distilled Drink

Jalisco is a state in west-central Mexico, known as the birthplace of mariachi music and tequila. Its capital city is Guadalajara. Jalisco was invaded by Spaniards shortly after the Spanish explorers began to arrive in 1521. In 1810 a priest named Miguel Hidalgo began a movement for independence from Spain. Eventually winning its independence from Spain the region grew throughout the 17th and 18th centuries with Guadalajara becoming an agricultural leader producing many crops, livestock, and pork.

The blue agave plant is native to the region and during the Spaniard reign, the blue agave was fermented then distilled by the Spaniards. Eventually, the hard liquor named Tequila was developed from the distillation process and the drink was an instant hit with the introduction of the railroad for shipping. The town of Tequila in the state of Jalisco is said to be the birthplace of the drink ‘tequila’.

Tequila rose in popularity in the United States during World War 2 when spirits from Europe became hard to get.

It is now the most popular liquor in the US and Mexico. Tequila is currently becoming more popular on a global scale and investors are taking notice. Tequila is said to be cooler than other liquors and its complexity paired with the broad range of tequilas makes it the drink of choice for many. Tequila is also said not to raise blood sugar levels.

Texas Dirt Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 2 oz cold brew coffee
  • 1 oz 100% agave tequila
  • 1 oz dark coffee liqueur (optional) I recommend Patrón XO Cafe
  • ¾ teaspoon brown sugar simple syrup
  • Place above ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake for 10 – 15 seconds.
  • Place six small pieces of chocolate sea salt brownie brittle in baggie to crush. Place crushed brownie brittle in bowl.
  • Rim cocktail glass with cream and dip into the crushed brownie brittle to coat rim.
  • Strain the shaken liquid into the brownie brittle lined cocktail glass and slowly drizzle with 1 Tablespoon heavy cream. Enjoy!

Instructions

The coffee liquor is optional and if you do not like overly sweet drinks you might prefer the cocktail without it, however, the Patron XO Cafe is just slightly sweet in comparison to most coffee liquors.

Tip** If you do not have a cold brew coffee then you can make a strong cup of coffee or espresso and let it cool. I sometimes use my Keurig with a dark roast pod on the smallest cup, 4 oz setting, then pop it in the freezer for 10 minutes and you are good to go.

Pure distilled 100% agave tequila is considered gluten-free. If you select your other ingredients using gluten-free products then you will have a Gluten-Free GF Texas Dirt Cocktail.
