Fresh Raspberry Crumble
What is a crumble?

With so many different variations of fruit desserts, including cobbler, crisp, and dumplings, what exactly is a crumble? Typically, a crumble is a type of dessert that normally consists of fruit and a streusel-like topping.

The fruit is usually baked altogether with the topping, which can be made from a variety of ingredients including flour, butter, sugar, and oats. Crumbles are often served with cream or ice cream, because life is better with ice cream, right?

I love making crumbles because they come together in a flash, and I usually have them baking while we’re having dinner. They come out of the oven hot and crunchy on top, and with that aforementioned scoop of ice cream, they’re the perfect dessert. I have used a variety of fruit for crumbles before, but raspberries fresh from our canes are one of my favorites. Easy Raspberry Crumble Ingredients

This easy raspberry crumble recipe only requires a few simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. Raspberries, sugar, cornstarch, oats, flour, butter, and cinnamon are all you need to make this delicious dessert. You can use frozen raspberries if fresh ones aren’t available, but I think the fresh ones make a big difference in flavor due to the water content around frozen berries. If frozen is all you have, go for it!

  • 4 cups fresh raspberries
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup butter (cold)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

How to Make Fresh Raspberry Crumble

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray an 8×8 baking dish with cooking spray.

2. In a medium bowl, combine berries, cornstarch, and granulated sugar. Mix to coat berries, but be careful not to mush them. Pour berries into prepared baking dish.

3. In the same bowl (or in a food processor), combine brown sugar, flour, oats, and cinnamon. Stir to combine. Add in cold butter in chunks and use a fork or your hands to combine until crumbly. (Alternately, combine all ingredients in food processor and pulse until a coarse mixture forms. The oats don’t maintain their appearance using this method, but it still tastes great!)

4. Spoon the crumble mixture over the berries evenly. It will not cover all of the berries, so no worries.

How to store fresh raspberry crumble

Raspberry crumble can be stored in the fridge for a few days. Just reheat individual servings in the microwave for a minute before enjoying again. And that’s it!

My kids will often ask for this as breakfast the next day, and they usually say, “it has oats and fresh fruit, so it’s healthy, right?” Clearly, my kids are on to my way of thinking, and I have a hard time saying no to this request.

Raspberry Crumble FAQ’s

  • Can raspberry crumble be made gluten free? Yes, simply use certified gluten free oats and your favorite gluten free flour.
  • Can raspberry crumble be made ahead of time? Yes, you can make it the night before and bake it off in the morning.
  • Is raspberry crumble healthy? This is a tough question to answer. I would say that it’s healthier than most desserts because it doesn’t have any added preservatives or artificial ingredients, and it contains raspberries, which are one of the lowest sugar fruits. However, feel free to swap out some of the sugar for stevia, and use whole wheat flour in place of the all purpose for healthier substitutions.
