My daughter, inspired by all the beautiful images on Pinterest of wonderful, sparkly cake creations, has set her heart on having a beautiful rainbow birthday cake.

It’s surprising how cost mounts up when you decorate a cake. I really didn’t want to invest in lots of different colour sprinkles, so suggested that they probably wouldn’t be hard to make ourselves. Turns out I was right (don’t you love it when that happens!).

Here is our super easy tutorial for making your own Sparkling Sugar Sprinkles in a whole rainbow of colours for jusr a few cents.

How to Make Homemade Sparkling Sugar Sprinkles

  • All you need is sugar – we used preserving.

  • A selection of food colouring. We used food colour gels, but I think this any sort of food colouring would work.

  • A jar and lid.

Throw the sugar in the jar, and add a few drops of colouring.

Pop on the lid, and give it a good shake. One of our gels was a little thick and didn’t mix so well, so we simply added a couple of drops of water and gave it another good shake which evened it out.

We then tipped our sugar into bowls, and left it for an hour in a warm place to completely dry out.

Once dry we returned it to the jars for another shake to ensure it wasn’t lumpy.

Store it in a little jar, ready for use. We actually think it looks pretty enough to give away as gifts, and love the fact we can make any colour we want!

What is preserving sugar and where can I purchase it?

Hey, I was also wondering that!

I did a quick Google search, here's what I found:

Preserving sugar is a kind of sugar used for making marmalades, jams and preserves using fruits that are naturally high in pectin (such as plums, redcurrants, blackcurrants, gooseberries, greengages, damsons and Seville oranges). ... Because it minimizes scum, it helps to make jams and jellies clearer.

This seems to be the first place I found that one can purchase it online:
