How to Make Blueberry Syrup for Drinks

Whether making berries in gin or a Blueberry cocktail, you will need to use a simple blueberry syrup made with fresh berries. A liquid sugar mixture will give your drink a sweet flavor and a fresh taste of blueberries.

To make the simple syrup, you will need one cup of fresh blueberries, half a cup of water, and half a cup of sugar. Mix it in a saucepan on medium heat and bring it to a soft boil. Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for 7 -10 minutes.

Simmering helps the fruit break down so you can squeeze the flavor out and leave the shell behind. Once the berries have broken down, use a fork or a potato masher to break them further down.

Pour through a mesh strainer, and the bottom half will be your blueberry simple syrup. Let the simple syrup cool down before adding it to your Blueberry cocktail. (Save the blueberry shells for a pancake topping!)

How to Achieve a Perfect Ombre Cocktail

The ombre cocktail, also known as a layered cocktail or floating a drink, is so easy! There are just a few trade tricks, and I will teach you those now.

  • First, know the weight, or gravity, of each item. The heaviest liquid must be on the bottom. For this drink, the simple blueberry syrup was the heaviest and placed at the bottom of the glass. Next was ginger ale, followed by gin.
  • All liquids need to be cold. Think of it this way; cold liquids want to keep to themselves. For this drink, the simple blueberry syrup, ginger ale, and gin were all placed in the refrigerator the night before. That might be a little overkill on my part. As long as they are cold, you can create a layered cocktail.
  • Place the spoon as low as possible into the drink. The spoon helps slow the force of liquid entering the glass while sumptuously spreading the liquid.
  • Hold the can/bottle as close to the spoon. This also lowers the force of the liquid introduced, which helps to create the layers.

There you have it! Four easy steps to creating a layered cocktail and achieving a perfect ombre.

Gin Drink Variations

A couple of gin drink variations can easily be made if you or your guests prefer a different drink.

  • Blueberry Gin and Tonic is a classic cocktail with the right blend of fruit, gin, and tonic water. The inclusion of fresh fruit gives it a refreshing taste, making it an easy party and tasty cocktail. Top with fresh lime juice and garnish with a wedge of lime. I recommend Tanqueray gin for that delicious flavor.
  • Blueberry Gin and Ginger Beer - If you like gin and ginger beer, substitute ginger ale for ginger beer to create a refreshing cocktail.
  • Blueberry Gin Fizz with Thyme – If you love fizzy drinks, Blueberries and gin are your best friends. It is a simple and easy recipe to freshen up your taste buds. Mix blueberries, simple syrup, lemon juice, thyme, and gin using a cocktail shaker. Put ice cubes into the mix and add club soda and your favorite garnish. It is the perfect summer cocktail.
  • Blueberry Gin Sour – Looking for the perfect balance of sweet and tart? Make this Blueberry Gin Sour. Add fresh lemon juice, sugar, and blueberries using a cocktail shaker or a glass. Give it a shake, and then add gin and egg whites. It will create a foam, and you can sip the juice to make final adjustments.

Pour the blueberry syrup in at the bottom of a cocktail or gin glass. Fill the glass with ice. To achieve the layered look, hold a spoon to the ice and slowly pour the ginger ale on top of the spoon. I like to hold the can as close as I can to the spoon. Repeat with the gin. Garnish with fresh berries, mint sprig, and lemon peel twist. Hello, beautiful cocktail! I really don’t like gin. Is there anything that I could switch without compromising the cocktail?

    Thank you~Shari

I don’t like gin either, but Hendricks gin doesn’t have that strong juniper taste. It is quite yummy.
