When I saw these "viral" apple tarts popping up all over social media I just knew that I had to try them. I am a huge fan of apple pie and puff pastry, so this sounded very appealing to me.

I often make apple pies and apple crisps during the fall months, but they do require a lot of time (which is completely worth it in my opinion) however, after trying these pastries they will definitely be my go-to when I am craving something appley. They were so easy to whip up and the taste was out of this world.

Because these tarts bake upside down, the brown sugar and butter combination creates this decadent caramelized coating over the apples. The puff pastry keeps this desert light and airy, so even though the topping is quite sweet it is nicely balanced.

These are a perfect treat for afternoon tea or coffee, and are sure to have a lasting impression. Enjoy!

Begin by thinly slicing two apples. Any apple suitable for baking will work well for this recipe.

Arrange the apples into six "rectangles" by slightly overlapping them as you lay them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

In a separate bowl combine cinnamon, brown sugar and butter together until evenly incorporated. Scoop about 1tbsp of the mixture onto each pile of apples. You do not need to spread this out as the butter will melt down on its own in the oven.

Next cut a sheet of thawed store bought puff pastry into 6 equal rectangles. Gently lay each rectangle of pastry over each of the apple piles. Using your fingers or a fork, press down the edges of each rectangle onto the parchment paper. Cut a few slits in the top of each pastry to allow for steam to escape while they are baking.

Whisk an egg, and brush over the pastry. Bake in the oven at 375 for 15-18 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Remove the pastry from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Its ok if some of the sugar and butter mixture has bubbled out from under the pastry. Once the pastries are cooled enough to touch, carefully flip them over to reveal the beautiful apples on the underside.

Continue to let the pastry cool to room temperature and then dust with icing sugar.

These pastries look so beautiful and taste even better. The brown sugar and butter caramelizes in the oven giving this treat even more decadence!

Enjoy with your next cup of tea or coffee!
