Ingredients Needed for Spritz cookie recipe

To make spritz cookies, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Red food coloring or gel (optional)
  • Valentine’s day sprinkles

To start, preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the egg yolk and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined. Gradually add in the flour, mixing until a dough forms.

If you want to make colored cookies, you can add a few drops of food coloring or a little red gel food coloring. Gel food coloring is a lot more vibrant so you won’t need much.

You can do an ombre effect by starting with the deep red color.

Take the darker spritz cookie dough and fill cookie press but leave a little bit of the deep red in the bowl. Now add some plain colored dough to it to bring the color intensity down. I dropped the dark color dough in the cookies press followed by the lighter colored dough on top.

Or. you could just divide the dough into small portions and add different colors to each one. Mix the dough until the color is evenly distributed.

Using the cookie press for the pink Valentine spritz cookies

Next, you will need a spritz cookie press. This is a tool that can be used to shape the dough into various designs. You can find one at most kitchen supply stores. I bought mine from Pampered chef many years ago. Here is similar one that comes with lots of shapes.

Fill the cookie press with the dough, and press out the cookies onto an ungreased baking sheet. Here is a tip- Do not use parchment paper. The cookie dough needs to stick to the cookie sheet. You can press out the cookies into a variety of shapes, such as hearts, stars, Christmas trees or even letters. Once you get the hang of using the cookie gun it is really fun to use.

Baking your pink Valentine cookies

Bake them for 8-10 minutes, or until they are lightly golden brown. Remove the heart cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorating your cookies

I used sprinkles for my cookies. You can use gold, white, pink, red or chocolate sprinkles. Sprinkles are my grandkids favorites so I always keep a bunch on hand. They love to use them on ice cream and in their hot chocolate.

If you are icing your cookies, let the icing dry completely. Once the icing is dry, the cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

To serve my pink Valentine spritz cookies in a fun way I made some cute DIY Valentine treat bags! Here is the tutorial for these.
