I am fanatical about kids being taught to cook. I believe it is one of the most important life skills that you can pass on to your children, and many of my childhood memories involve my brother and I watching our Mum cook, and learning to cook ourselves.

Egg and Bacon Spaghetti, which is a simplified version of a great Italian classic, is a big favourite in our household. Our nickname for it is ‘Everyone loves it Spaghetti’, as it is the one meal that every visiting child has eaten without complaint, which, as all of you with kids will know, is close to miraculous.

It is super simple and quick to make so perfect for kids to cook.

I have put the quantities that the kids used on this occasion, but it is very forgiving so adapt it to suit yourself.

Generally we just throw in a handful of cheese and a dollop of cream. We’ve made it before with Cheddar, Parmesan, and Pecorino; all taste great.

Likewise we’ve substituted the bacon with ham, cooked sausage and smoked salmon in the past (in which case you needn’t fry it first).

It is also rather lovely with a few peas or baby broad beans thrown in.

How to Make Egg and Bacon Spaghetti

We used

  • 6 rashers of streaky bacon
  • 100g of cheddar cheese
  • about 40mls of cream
  • an egg
  • 200 g of fresh spaghetti.

The kids had planned on just the two of them eating it, but Daddy turned up just as it was ready, so they had to share with him. So I would say that these quantities feed 2-3 depending on how piggy you are feeling!

Wash your hands, put a large pan of water on to boil, cut up the bacon and grate the cheese.

Crack the egg into a bowl, pick out the shell, and give it a good whisk with a fork.

Mix in the cream, and throw in whatever cheese you are using.

Fry the bacon until golden, and add your spaghetti to the boiling water with a pinch of salt.

When the spaghetti is cooked, drain (you may need an adult to help) and return to the pan. Mix in your cooked bacon, and then your egg mixture.

Stir together until you can no longer see the grated cheese. The heat from the pasta will melt the cheese and cook the egg.

Serve with extra cheese and season with salt and pepper if desired!

I already make this but I only add couple eggs, 1 pkg bacon cut up and a medium onion in the hot spaghetti. My husband and I love it. I always make extra and freeze what is left. It freezes great and I think it always taste better the next day. I will definitely try your receipt with having the cream and cheese in it. Was funny when this popped up I was just thinking how I could change it a little and there you where.
