Naked Cakes are all the rage right now, and for good reason. They are so easy to make. They are perfect for weddings, bridal and baby showers, birthday parties , holidays and celebrations. Trust me, if I can do this, so can you.

What is a Naked Cake?

A naked cake is easy to recognize, it’s simply a cake with a minimal outer layer of frosting on the top and sides of the cake, which shows off the cake’s natural texture and filling. Some naked cakes have no frosting on their outer edge, while others have just a bit of buttercream. Naked cakes are layer cakes that are nearly bare on the sides. The cakes are stacked up with frosting or filling between each layer. The beauty of naked cakes is that they are a blank canvas-you can decorate them with faux or real florals and fresh berries. They look amazing. One thing that I like about naked cakes is that they don’t have a ton of frosting on them. I’m not a fan of much frosting.

I made a simple white cake and buttercream frosting. Both of these recipes are so easy to make.

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour cake pans.

Step 2: In a medium mixing bowl or batter bowl, mix all dry ingredients.

Step 3: In another bowl, add wet ingredients. Mix well.

Step 4: Mix wet and dry ingredients. Pour batter into cake pans. Bake for 35-40 minutes.

Step 5: Let the cakes cool. Using a cake top leveler, trim off the tops of the cakes to make them level-this will make it so much easier to layer the cakes.

Should I put the Cake in Fridge Before Icing?

Yes! Frosting the cakes when they are cold keeps them from crumbing. A great tip for keeping a cake moist is to wrap it with a layer of plastic wrap, then a layer of aluminum foil, and put it in the freezer. The moisture from the freshly baked cake will keep it moist in the freezer. You can leave it in the freezer for a couple of hours or overnight.

It’s a good idea to put small squares of parchment paper under the cake before you frost it. After you are finished, pull out the pieces of parchment paper and your cake plate will be clean and frosting free.

TIP: Attempting to spread frosting onto warm cake layers is a recipe for disaster. If you have made your frosting ahead, make sure it is at room temperature before you start.

Step 6: While the cakes are cooling in the freezer, make the buttercream frosting.

Step 7: Place a small dab of frosting onto the cake plate that you want to serve it on, then place the cake on top. This dab of frosting will keep the cake in place. I added a large dab of homemade blueberry jam on each layer, then added a large dab of frosting on each new layer. Make sure that you don’t put too much frosting, or the frosting can bulge. Frost the cake using a frosting spatula. It’s best to use the frosting at room temperature, it will be easier to spread. When you have all three layers frosted, use a frosting smoother, smooth the frosting and remove as much of the frosting as you like. It’s just that easy.

Decorating the Naked Cake with Fresh fruit and Berries

I used red grapes, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and pears. I really wanted to use fresh figs-they are so pretty, but I couldn’t find any. I settled for pears-not my favorite look, but I don’t hate it either. I also used fresh mint leaves and eucalyptus from my garden. You could also use fresh or faux flowers.

Beautiful interiors don’t have to come with an outrageous price tag. My style is what I like to call Vintage French Farmhouse, I love mixing decorating styles, especially opposites like the glitz of a chandelier dripping in crystals with a chair upholstered in worn aged leather. Refined, yet not too formal-but, livable, elegant traditional design, adding warmth and vintage elements.
