American Pumpkin Pie Recipe

November is the unofficial month of gratitude. With  Thanksgiving at the end of the month and the flurry of Christmas happenings right after it’s nice to take some time this November to reflect on what you are thankful for and all the blessings you have in your life.

One of the things I am most grateful for are my friends. It can be difficult with our busy, hectic lives to find time to get together with our friends, but in November, it’s a great time to call or text your buddies you haven’t seen in a while and plan a little get-together.

Take some time this month to invite your friends over and host a Friendsgiving. It doesn’t have to be a grand affair, why not make it a potluck event? Everyone brings their favorite dish and if you know me and my reputation for my sweet tooth that means I will be planning dessert!

One of my favorite fall desserts is obviously pumpkin pie. Who doesn’t love a delicious slice of warm pumpkin pie? This year I attempted to make a homemade American pumpkin pie. It’s easier than it sounds and I’ve got a great recipe for you that only requires a few basic ingredients.

Ingredients for American Pumpkin Pie

  •         1 – 9 inch graham cracker pie crust
  •         2 eggs
  •         1 cup heavy whipping cream
  •         ¾ cup sugar
  •         1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  •         ½ tsp salt
  •         ½ tsp Ground ginger
  •         ¼ tsp Ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1 Can of pumpkin pure

Directions for American Pumpkin Pie:

Heat the oven to 425. Beat eggs in large bowl, then add remaining ingredients. Mix and pour into the pie crust.

Bake 15 minutes and then reduce the heat to 350. You will know it’s done when you can poke a fork in it and it comes out clean. Let the pie cool at least 2 hours before serving.

How do you know if your pumpkin pie is ready?

Insert a table knife near the center of the pumpkin pie. If it comes out clean, the pie is done. (The knife test may cause your filling to crack as it cools.) You can also shake the pie gently; it’s done when the filling is set and no longer jiggles.

Can you overcook pumpkin pie?

If your pumpkin filling cracks or separates, it’s probably overcooked. If your pumpkin pie is set on the edge, yet the center is still just a bit jiggly, then you have cooked your pie to perfection.

Do I have to put pumpkin pie in the fridge?

Yes, you should refrigerate pumpkin pie. Cover the pie loosely with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Properly stored, pumpkin pie will keep for three to four days in the refrigerator. don’t leave the pies out all day prior to Thanksgiving dinner, whether you make them the day before or bake them in the morning.

How do you know when a pie is set?

It’s simply the difference between a little jiggle and a full-on wobble. When you check your pie for doneness, gently and carefully hold it by one edge, then give it a little shake back and forth. If the filling is flowing in a wavy movement from the center to the edge, your pie isn’t set quite yet.
