Why Make Homemade Tortillas?

Homemade tortillas are a delicious and healthier alternative to store-bought tortillas. They are easy to make and require only a few simple ingredients. In this recipe, I will be showing you how to make vegan tortillas using a tortilla press with just 5 ingredients.

Making your own tortillas is a great way to control the ingredients that go into your food. You can avoid unnecessary additives and preservatives that are commonly found in store-bought tortillas. Additionally, homemade tortillas have a fresh, authentic taste that cannot be matched by their mass-produced counterparts.

To make these vegan tortillas, all you need is flour, water, salt, baking powder and oil. Simply mix the ingredients together, knead the dough, and press it into tortillas using a tortilla press. They cook up quickly on a hot skillet and can be enjoyed with a variety of fillings and toppings.

What should I put in my homemade tortillas?

Some healthy meal ideas that you can use tortillas for include veggie wraps with hummus, avocado, and mixed greens; black bean and sweet potato tacos with salsa and cilantro; or grilled veggie fajitas with peppers, onions, and mushrooms. The possibilities are endless when it comes to using homemade tortillas in your meals.

Recipe FAQ's

Is it worth it to get a tortilla press?

While it's not necessary to use a tortilla press to make homemade tortillas, it can be a valuable tool that saves time, ensures consistency. A press allows you to quickly and uniformly flatten the dough, making the process more efficient, especially if you're making a large batch of tortillas.

What do you line a tortilla press with?

You typically line a tortilla press with some form of non-stick material to prevent the dough from sticking to the press and to ensure easy removal of the tortilla. The traditional material used for lining a tortilla press is plastic, or you can use parchment paper cut into circles to fit your press.

Do homemade tortillas need to be refrigerated?

Homemade tortillas do not need to be refrigerated immediately after they are made. If you plan to consume them within a day or two, you can store them at room temperature in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap. This will help maintain their freshness and softness. However, if you intend to keep the homemade tortillas for a longer period, it is advisable to refrigerate them. Placing them in the refrigerator helps to slow down the growth of bacteria and extend their shelf life. To refrigerate homemade tortillas, place them in a resealable plastic bag or an airtight container, and make sure they are tightly sealed.

Expert Tips

  • Choose the right flour: Opt for a high-quality all-purpose flour or a combination of all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour for a healthier twist. Avoid using cake flour or self-rising flour as they won't yield the desired texture.
  • Measure ingredients accurately: Use a kitchen scale to measure the flour precisely. This ensures consistency in your tortilla dough and helps achieve the right texture.
  • Add fat for tenderness: While traditional flour tortillas contain lard, you can substitute it with vegetable shortening or plant-based margarine to keep the tortillas vegan. Incorporating fat into the dough will make the tortillas soft and pliable.
  • Balance the liquid: Gradually add warm water to the flour and fat mixture while mixing. The amount of water needed can vary depending on the flour type and humidity. Start with a smaller amount and gradually add more until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky.
  • Rest the dough: Allow the dough to rest for at least 30 minutes. This resting period hydrates the flour fully and relaxes the gluten, making the dough easier to roll out or press and resulting in more tender tortillas.
  • Divide the dough evenly: After resting, divide the dough into small portions to make individual tortillas. Use a kitchen scale or a measuring cup to ensure each portion is the same size, ensuring consistent cooking time.
  • Use parchment or plastic wrap: To prevent the dough from sticking to the tortilla press, place each dough portion between two pieces of parchment paper or plastic wrap before pressing.
  • Press gently and evenly: Apply firm and even pressure to the tortilla press to flatten the dough. Avoid pressing too hard, as it can result in thin or overly dense tortillas. Aim for a thickness of about ⅛ inch (3-4 mm).
  • Cook the tortillas correctly: Place the pressed tortillas on a preheated skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side until lightly browned with some air bubbles. Avoid overcooking, as it can make the tortillas dry and brittle.
  • Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to making tortillas. Don't get discouraged if your first attempts are not flawless. With time and practice, you'll become more skilled at making delicious vegan flour tortillas using a tortilla press. Enjoy!
