Gluten Free Teriyaki Tofu

This dish is vegetarian and can easily be made vegan by substituting honey with maple syrup. It is completely gluten free and absolutely delicious! Serve with rice of choice and broccoli or preferred veggie.


I froze the tofu and let it thaw to give it a texture more similar to chicken. This extra step is entirely optional, but I recommend giving it a try to see how you like it! After it thaws, just make sure to press the tofu to remove excess liquid then rip it into small pieces. I prefer doing this vs cutting it into cubes.

Ingredients
For the Tofu
  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced white parts only
  • 1/2 cup tamari soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water mixed with 3 tsp corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
Instructions
For the Tofu
Heat oil in a non-stick pan
After tofu has been pressed, rip into smaller pieces or cut into cubes
In a bowl or container with a lid, add the tofu and corn starch then shake it until each piece of tofu is coated
Fry the tofu until crispy and golden brown on all sides, then set mix with the teriyaki sauce
Garnish with sesame seeds and green onion
For the Teriyaki Sauce
Heat sesame oil in a pan then add the minced garlic, ginger, and white tips of the green onion
Saute until aromatic then add the tamari soy sauce, honey, and sugar
Whisk together then add the water and corn starch in a bowl
Add to the pan and whisk together, letting the sauce thicken
Continue to heat and whisk periodically until the sauce thickens
