In this post, I share a recipe for the quickest and easiest rolls. These can be made into dinner rolls or hamburger buns. You can probably whip these up faster than you can run out to the store and buy buns! Well…depending on where you live!

This is a great recipe for a beginning bread baker. It is practically fool proof. This is one of the first bread recipes I ever made successfully! It kept me going on my baking journey. We all need some successes along the way don’t we?YeastThis recipe calls for quite a bit of yeast. This is what makes it come together so quickly. We have tried it with the full amount and with half as much also. The ones with half as much turned out just fine. They did take a bit longer to rise though. So if you want super fast homemade rolls, use the full amount.FlourI buy Prairie Gold White Whole Wheat Flour. I use this for everything I make. However, it is a very light, fine flour. If you use a coarser whole wheat flour then you will probably want to substitute half of it with white flour.ShapingIn your part of the world, do you say hamburger buns or do you say hamburger rolls? I’ve noticed my in-laws (from NY), call them rolls, here in the midwest we call them buns. Whatever you choose to call them, I think you will find them delicious! If you are making dinner rolls, pinch a small ball of dough and just fold it into itself and roll smooth. Probably about the size of a little cutie orange. For hamburger buns, just make them about twice that size. They will spread out a bit and make a nice bun. When they are done baking, simply slice them in half.

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups Flour Either a light wheat like Prairie Gold or half wheat and half white
  • 2 TBS Yeast Active or Instant
  • 1 Cup Milk Warm 105°-115°
  • ¾ Cup Water Warm
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • ½ Cup Oil I use melted butter
  • 3 TBS Honey or sugar
Instructions

Preheat oven to 400. In a small sauce pan, heat the milk water and salt until warm. Melt the butter and mix it with the warm liquids. Add the honey or sugar. Blend together the yeast and 2 cups of the flour in a stand mixer. Gradually add in the wet ingredients alternating between those and the remaining two cups of flour. You can also do this by hand if you do not have a mixer. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. These are lightest and fluffiest when you don’t over work the dough. Let rest for 10 minutes.Next, shape into rolls or hamburger buns. Place on a greased cookie sheet and let rise for 20-30 minutes. They will double in size. They will also rise quite a bit more while baking. Bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes. The hamburger buns may take a bit longer. They should be nice and golden. Brush the tops with butter.
